X5M high pitch noise on warm start (not cold)
I have this issue - X5M high pitch noise on warm start (not cold), searched forums/googled, only found cold start noise which is usually pulley, mine is only on warm start when you drive it to a place and park it for about an hour then start the car and this high pitch noise comes on for about 30sec and gone.... took it to dealer 3 times (CPO), they said all three times - can't replicate the noise and send me back without doing anything....
Need you guys expertise to identify this noise, could it be "crank case valve?" video clips (noise is from front of passenger side) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/8birjhqr4q...81%29.mov?dl=0 |

Is the noise only present while you're driving?
If not, any chance you can take a recording from outside the car?

This might sound stupid but is your AC on? I let a buddy do some recall work on my car, I got it back and heard a noise I didn't recognize. Ends up it was simply that lol. If not, you could do the old age trick of spraying carb cleaner around the intake boots, vacuum lines, etc and wait for the idle to jump up.

I finally found the source of this high pitch noise - it's EBOX cooling fan part# 12907572985 - https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...47#12907572985
Does anyone know where this even located in E70 and how hard is it to replace it? It looks like it's well known issue in 3-series - http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1053216 |

Yeah I get this every now and then - it's VERY intermittent, and haven't heard it for a while. Like you described, turning off stereo/climate has no effect.
The link above is showing the small cooling fan for the DME, which is in the back corner of the engine bay (different sides according to RHD/LHD). I've had mine apart many times, so can do it pretty quickly, and will attack it next time the sound comes back, to confirm the source. There's a how-to photo guide post over on N54 in the S63 JB4 thread. |
