I would assume that the owner's manual lists it somewhere, otherwise, call your dealership and ask them, they should know for sure!

In most of their engines, BMW uses BMW-branded Castrol SynTec (not GTX, which is a mineral-based oil). 5W30 or similar depending on where you live -- your owner's manual will have a chart showing which viscosity to use.
If you change oil more frequently than called for (ie: on your own nickel) you can use any true synthetic and your warranty will be fine. I say "true synthetic" because some of what are called synthetics are, in fact, processed mineral-based oils. Ironically, Castrol SynTec made in the US is one of these. Castrol SynTec made in Germany is a true ester-base synthetic. Go figure. I just use Mobil 1, because I can use it in all three cars, my motorhome, and my motorbike. |
