335D Owner Now Looking for xdrive35d
Hey folks,
I'm a frequent lurker on the M57/N57 site and currently own an undeleted, but chipped 2011 335d M-sport...and love the car! I'm well aware of all of the CBU, swirl flap, harmonic balancer, etc. horror stories related to emissions. Fortunately on my current D, I've avoided them for the most part. I track it occasionally, and flog it on a regular basis..everything runs well. Now, my wife's Honda CRV is coming to an end, and we need to replace...I'm looking at the E70 35d, 2011-2013. (I just drove the F15 and really didn't like it. Very blase' driving experience). So here is my question...other than emission related issues, what are some things that I should look out for when examining a 35d? Any common weak points? Any input as to the typical mileage that any issues show up? Thanks in advance...hopefully will be joining this group as well! |

I have a 2012 and except the NOX sensor had no issues. Here is a list of common issues I think somebody posted this earlier:
1) Red boost hose seals fail leak oil and boost common 2) Vacuum line failures probably should replace at around 60-80K miles 3) Harmonic Balancer typically fails at 60-80k miles 4) Engine mounts (usually show up as extra engine vibration) 5) Turbo oil lines 60-80k miles (mentioned above) 6) CBU (less of a problem than it used to be) every 60-100k miles 7) EGR cooler cracks (exhaust smell in cabin) anytime 8) NOx sensors (now 12/120K warrantied) 9) SCR tank failures(now 12/120K warrantied) 10) MAF sensor quickly degrads (shows up as unexplained EGR implausibility) 11) differential pressure sensors 12) Thermostat fails open 60-80K replace* 13) Glow plug failures / module (often due to bad thermostat) around 100K 14) rear subframe mounts tire quickly and add to rear bounce |

Thanks Der Kaiser! None of the issues look too earth shattering. Most of them I’m familiar with already. Based on the prices I see for nice ones w about 50k miles -$26-30k seems like a great value.

Buy one! Mine just went over 198k miles. I’ve done a lot of prevenitive maintenance but, since I’ve owned it (bought at 9X K miles) we’ve had two items fail... the left and right rear airbags. That’s it! So, in more than 100k miles driven, the only items that failed were the rear airbags, which are $80 each off of Amazon.
I love our X5! I don’t see us ever getting rid of it! Last edited by 335dsleeper; 10-27-2017 at 10:58 AM.. |

I'm just getting ready to sell my 2012 35d and have had a few issues with some emissions components and the transfer case. The last oil change service they discovered a failed glow pack control module. I have an extended warranty, which has made quite a big difference on any problems that have come up in the 69,000 miles of ownership. They are amazing looking SUVs and the comfort seats and sport pack are must have options.

The 35d really is great. I happened to find one pretty much fully loaded, so here are my reccomended. 1. Premium Audio. This is a very important one, as the normal audio system is kinda trash. 2. CPO. Having a CPO car has helped me a lot when the brakes got a rock stuck between the pad and rotor, causing lots of noise. Also when the fuel tank sensor went for some unknown reason.

Thanks folks....all good responses. I do intend to find a car with comfort seats...one of the main use cases is going up to Tahoe, so would want the extra adjustability, and....comfort. One question, I saw that there was a seat ventilation option, is that included with the comfort seats or a separate option?
Premium audio system, is that similar to the harmon kardon in e90? |

Vented seats in an additional option.
I have neither the comfort seats or the vented option. I find the X5 extremely comfortable regardless but, the wife and I have totes with the idea of putting a used set of comforts in. I’ve read it both easy and a nightmare. |
