What happened in 2013? 2013 BMW X5 Front Crash Test 3 Stars. All other years 5 stars

I've got a 2002 BMW 330i that I'll be buried in. Love that car dearly. Recently hit a deer head on with my 2010 Honda CRV. I've always liked the X5 for its looks and performance. We like the idea of a third row (even if it's small) and the fact it would be a nicer car in many ways. I'm aware of the BMW maintenance concerns.

In our research we want something safe with two kids (plus the fact I just hit a dear head on and walked away completely fine). I was very surprised to see the 2013 X5 received just a 3 stars front crash test rating from the NHTSA. From 2003-2010 it's all 5 star front driver and 4 star front passenger. Then again from 2015+ it seems like all 5 star for driver and passenger.

Does anyone know what happened in 2013? It seems odd that on the E70 chassis it would change that drastically, when it was solid from 2007-2010?

new rating system went in for 2011+ models. So what used to be a 5-star rating is no longer a 5 star rating.
