X5M Front Bumper on 50i

I've been looking through BMW's part catalog and people have mentioned the 2011 M front bumper wouldn't fit on the 2011 50i. One of the reasons was the light are different. That affects the fender but when I parted both out they were the same lights, same fenders, same hood, just the bumper was different. So I wonder if I could easily put the M bumper on with the supplied hardware. Thoughts? I'm having my bumper refinished due to some damage and thinking just for a few hundred more $$ I can get the M bumper. Figure the cost to fix and refinish would be close in price of buying one new for them to light prep and paint.

I wondered the same thing myself. That bumper is awesome.

In talking with the collision shop it sure sounds like it can fit. I'm on the fence paying the extra $1200 for it and all the parts needed for the swap. Eventually replace the rear as well with the M cause I really like the quad exhaust look. Plus there are more performance options for those style mufflers.

So with losing the fog lights, is there any error codes going to be thrown? And if so, how do you turn that error off? Can the dealer or do I have to get an aftermarket programmer?

It's unlikely there's a diagnostic code for fog lamps but it's feasible.

This might come in handy: http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/bmw/ but I don't see any codes associated with fog lamps. =8-)

If I understand it correctly, the X5M front end is pretty much an X6 front end. The Headlight, fenders, and bumpers are different from a standard X5.

Oh, I realized the X5 fenders are plastic.

Yup, had to look at the lines and they are different. Talking to body shop they said the bumper, fenders, lights, then all the lower trim all around the vehicle would need to be replaced. Also there are different supporting brackets for front and rear. Even if you have the M appearance package on the 50i the rockers don't match up to the fender flares at either the front or rear. You'd think BMW would find more reuse in their products. But guess its their way to make more money.

I guess the M Division likes the aerodynamics front end of the X6, so they fitted it into the X5.

This is not true at all. I have the 2012 n63 with the m package and I put on the 2012 x5 m rear bumper and installed the x5 m performance exhaust and everything matches up including the flares. I had to mod the exhaust from the muffler to pipe with an insert because the x5 m exhaust is about 1/8" larger but thats it.
