Should I open this bottle of whiskey?

Has anyone drank something like this? Should I drink or leave it?

Here are some tasting notes: https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskie...n-1972-whisky/

I'd say yes as it's price point is only $199 US, compared with other 40 year old Whisky's that are usually $2000+.

What's the point in owning it if you're not gonna enjoy it?

I'm no whisky pro, but my thought is that if it's at Costco, it's probably not that rare. Drink up.

Oh wait, just noticed the numbering on the card. One of 13,000 bottled. Yeah, go for it. Drink away.

not necessarily. Costco has been known to get their hands on some good liquors. Pappy has shown up at Costco Liquor stores a few times.

I have a bottle of 1904 Jack Daniels that if shit hits the fan, I'm opening. The only reason behind not opening so far is that the bottle is signed by a distiller that passed thus making the bottle extremely valuable as long as it stays unopened.

Drink if you want. It isn't going to get any better the longer you leave it. Scotch doesn't age in glass bottles - once it is bottled, that's it. The character / aging is imparted during the time it is in the barrel.

Now if you had come across a barrel of said scotch, my answer would be to leave it.

Are you freakin' kidding me?!

That has got to be an urban legend.

I found a sh*tty little dive bar in Chicago that had Pappy (I think it was the 20 year) for $8 a shot. I thought it was a typo on the menu. Granted, they were probably just refilling the bottle with something else, but whatever, it was fun regardless.

My dad had a bottle of Jack that was real old. I don't think it was as old as yours but he used to say that when Russia launched missiles against the US he was going to sit down say a bunch of Hail Mary's and drink the whole thing himself.

After he died, we found the bottle with about eight ounces left. I guess there must have been a false report about Armageddon...anyway we toasted him and killed it off.

That's awesome! Dad was really close with Jimmy Bedford (6th Master Distiller if I'm not mistaken) so the distillery and many of those involved with it are close. When dad passed away the distillery crew showed up at the funeral and set a few people back in their seats. Most had no idea who they were but they looked liked a scene out of a western movie walking in wearing black leather coats and jeans. It was very surreal to see 2 Master Distillers walk through the doors to pay the old man respect. A very cool moment.

My last was Pappy 15. My wife bought me a shot of it on our 15 year wedding anniversary. I think it was in the $50 range. I'm the same way, I usually start out with 4 Roses and about 50% of the time I'm like "F it! Give me the Pappy!" There's one of our go-to bar/restaurant in Seattle that has a dusty bottle of the 15 year on the top shelf. it's not on the menu. I think I'm the only one who sees it way up there and ever orders it.

Such a great story. I wonder if the person at the register knew what it was or was just thinking "Damn! This fool paid HOW MUCH for a bottle of booze?!"

They actually had a flight at Fox's Cigar bar in Scottsdale, AZ of the 15, 20, 23 for $100, since no one was actually spending anything on it they used it as a promo to attract people. Definitely pairs fucking fantastic with a nice cigar.

LOL the same shit happens to me everytime, 'I'm not spending $200 on a shot of pappy 23'... 5 Blacks later.. Bartender Double shot of Pappy!

The person at the register had no fucking clue; was looking at me like i was all crazy spending $600 on a bourbon; he actually mentioned they had a special on bottles of Blue Label for $125 i just brushed it off and said next time.
