Hi all- thought I'd just share that my X is in the shop getting its valve seals and thrust bushings done. I attached some pictures for those who are interested.

Big & $$$ job!

I had mine replaced under CPO, otherwise $9K at my dealer. Nice job getting them replaced - you're good to go for the long run now (no other repairs bigger than this one), and you'll have a much easier job selling when the time comes

Todd, do you have a warranty?

Every 50i will need these replaced somewhere between 50-100K miles. So depending on your current mileage, and estimated future mileage before selling, you may not have to deal with it. My seals failed the test at the dealer, though barely, at just 55K miles.

If BMW did replace the seals on a motor, weren't they replaced with newer version that last longer?

Going NAKED at the moment
I am almost right at the 50k mark... but have only put on 22k in over 3 years. Soon as I see smoke, I sell!

Would you mind sharing how much the estimate is to get the valve stem seals replaced?

Just want to budget that for my future. I have 90k on xDrive50. You could PM me if you don't want to share to the world.

It’s about 45 hrs labor. My dealer got it goodwilled 95% from BMW and I ended up paying around $250, so about $5k total (this is at special rate that BMW pays the dealership). At regular dealership rates, probably around $8k.

It is about $9k at a dealer.

Got mine done at 45k miles. Warranty must have spent $25k+ on that car between 29-51k miles. I got rid of it.

I heard dealers don't replace the seals anymore. They replace the whole short block because BMW provides N63 blocks cheap now. It's less labor to transfer all the equipment to the new engine, less chance for mistake, and less oil leaks because upper oil pan and turbo oil return lines would leak soon anyway.

Is this confirmed? Sooooo, would be cheaper than $9k?

Jiggz, any idea if this is what they did for yours?

I'd contact your local dealer to see how they're handling this nowadays.

I had mine replaced last December and they replaced the seals, not the short block.

Had mine replaced this spring under warranty at 51,000. Think the total would have been $8700.

My time has finally come to replace the valve seals and thrust rod bushings (110,000 km). I’m currently burning about 1 liter of oil a week. Looking at about $5,000-$6,000 with an independent shop (waiting on the official quote). Hopefully I can get 4-5 more years out of my 2012 BMW X5 50i.

Should I suggest that they replace the whole short block as suggested above (because BMW provides N63 blocks cheap now and it’s less labor to transfer all the equipment to the new engine, less chance for mistake, and less oil leaks because upper oil pan and turbo oil return lines would leak soon anyway)?

Not sure about the short block replacement, but I'd budget some other $, if possible, for anything else your shop finds with the motor dropped out. Access will be much easier to other potential problem areas, reducing your labor costs by quite a bit. I had 3 or 4 other parts/areas addressed with the motor out, with labor being a 1/3 of normal.

Good luck with the repairs...dang, a liter a week is a lot!

My 2012 X5 50i was in the shop to have the valve seals replaced but they ran a leak test first (smoke was coming out of the exhaust when starting the car cold, not just when idling) and 3 cylinders failed so they're now recommending to put in a new engine altogether. I'm looking at around $7,800 for the engine plus $4,500 in labour (CAD$). I love my X5, so I want to get it done but I'm in no rush to spend that kind of money. Any downside to waiting a few months before getting it done (other than burning more oil)?

Not really, but can you clarify - do you just need the valve stem seals OR a new engine due to other issues?
If stem seals only, you can get them done for free!! via the class action lawsuit...

I'm in Canada so no luck on the class action (US and Puerto Rico only). An independent mechanic determined that the whole engine should be replaced as the valve seals are only a part of a bigger problem (3/8 cylinders failing the leak test). Taking the car to the dealership next week to see if BMW can provide some relief.
