I believe it's the start-stop feature that makes them use something like this or the heavier AGM. |

The issue, though, is that lead acid batteries have a different charging voltage that would be damaging to a Li-ion battery. The Li-ion battery charging voltage is insufficient to charge a lead acid battery. The best case is that the car is able to detect the battery type and adjust accordingly. Less ideal is that the car can be coded for the battery type. Worst case is that the charging system is locked to sub-12V. I don't think we have any definitive answers yet. |

MT7-34 AGM Interstate Battery $254 retail price 46.7 pounds So in less than 5 minutes of searching I can find an AGM Battery specifically suited for the F30 chassis and ASS system of a 3.0 liter engine, weighing only ~16 pounds more than the LI-ION battery, and costing over $800 less. My point is: In 4-6 years or so, when you MIGHT need to start thinking about a new battery, expect there to be options that cost less than $300 and have a very similar weight rating. My guess is that unless you live in the arctic circle, there will be battery options with fewer CCA and reserve power that are AGM and weigh in around 30-35 pounds. Maybe you'll need to put a foam block near them to lock them in place - no big deal. |

Changing permanently to a lead acid battery may be a problem.
the F80 and F82 dont have the Intelligent battery sensor (IBS) equipment installed on the car but rather its integrated into the battery itself. So without being able to plug the ECU IBS wires in anywhere you will get constant errors and the charging system will not know what to do. Crash safety features will also be unavailable.

Yes. But after 4 years or 50K miles, it may cost you. Nobody is sure yet how long these will last.
Cheers.

Was just reading chapter 6 of the complete vehicle technical guide found in the sticky threads. Based on what I am reading, it seems as if the car's alternator and charging circuits are designed for the Li battery. I won't re type the whole thing but the Li battery can take charge faster, among other things. I think there would be issues with a lead acid battery. Also, there is circuitry in the battery, which the car would likely not do well without.
Actually, reading further, the circuits in the battery are responsible for FIFTEEN different functions such as diagnostics, wake up, voltage monitoring, state of charge, etc. I would hazard to guess a standard battery without this would not let the car start, and might not let it power up! Out of curiosity, the listed number of charging cycles for each is 350 for the lead acid vs. 5000 for the Li battery. |

Probably not much weight savings to be had. You definitely don't want to run a 13 lb battery on these type of cars except for track only cars and the next step up is around 20 lbs so you are really only cutting 10 lbs off with a significant loss of capacity.

Looks like BMWNA MSRP is $1518.45. Predictions about it being cheaper than $1k in four years are losing out in the wrong direction.

I have a Voltphreaks 6lb Li-ion battery in my Exige. They make larger ones also.

the lead acid in my 2006 325 lasted 9 years before alarm messages start showing up.
I would be happy if this one goes the same distance. according to what I've read they have 4 times the cycle life than lead acid.
