Homelink Programming

I'll try to make this as easy as i can.

I purchased a new Liftmaster 8550 garage door opener. I programmed my wife's 2012 528 homelink with no problems. I am unable to program my 2013 X5 homelink. It will not accept the input from the garage door remote. I have tried every angle, distance, etc. I also tried multiple remotes from the new unit and they will not work. For grins and to verify I do not have a homelink problem, I reprogrammed my homelink with my "old" liftmaster remote and it immediately accepted the signal and programmed the homelink button. That tells me there must be a compatibility problem on my 2013 that doesnt exist on my wife's 2012.....makes no sense. There are "repeaters" available from liftmaster designed to solve this issue but mostly speak to cars 2009 and older. I dont mind buying one as they are cheap but my car is basically brand new so it just doesnt make sense there is a compatibility issue.

Any ideas before I buy a repeater? Am I missing something simple?

Thx

This is known problem with the "new" homelink with MY Q technology. It's the new homelink 4.0 software. Your BMW probably has the older software.

I had a tough time programming mine on my 2012. It finally accepted the remote when I literally had the remote touching the homelink button, then put the garage door opener in learning mode, etc, etc

3rd time us a success!
Something mikew2069 said made me try this again. Homelink has a good step by step guide on their site. Before I was just trying to learn the remote OR pressing the learn button on the garage opener. You have to do both! This is for my 2011 x5 and a 2005'ish Liftmaster...maybe it will help someone else:

Step one:
Turn on the ignition or start the car

Step two:
This is optional but suggested if you're doing this for the first time (this will clear all buttons):
Hold the outside 2 Homelink buttons until they start flashing rapidly. Let go.

Step two:
Hold down the homelink button you want to program, don't let off.

Step three:
Hold the garage door opener a couple of inches away from the mirror and hold down the button until the Homelink light flashes rapidly. Let off of both the Homelink button and garage door remote button.

Step four:
Press your Homelink button. If it doesn't operate your garage door move to step five.

Step five:
Press the learn button (sometimes orange or purple) on the back of the opener.

***You have 30 sec to complete the next step. Run to your car!

Step six:
Press the Homelink button for 2 seconds. Release. Press for 2 seconds. Release. Press for 2 seconds. Release. (3 sets)

Mine started working after that sequence.

Here is some more info:
http://www.homelink.com/program/inst...No/1/usenglish

I have a gate opener (Doorking) that I can't get to program but from what I've read online it's incompatible / different technology.

Good luck!

Yup, you need to make sure your homelink button learns your remote, THEN learns your opener

I have done this so many times with so many cars, it's silly. Yet step 3 just isn't happening with our X5M. Known issue with the searching I've done, but ours isn't cooperating. I have the opener so close to the button while "learning" (the standard recommendation) that an enema would be less invasive. I might try sacrificing a Cadillac Cimarron in my front yard as step 7; a gift to the automotive gods so they may show mercy and let me use my homelink vs. the clip-on opener sinfully ruining my interior ambience like some sort of rebadged Cavalier on a Cadillac showroom floor.

UPDATE: I received my Homelink Repeater today. It fixed the problem, literally took about 60 seconds to do everything. But, I gotta say.....whats up BMW, a 2012 has a more recent version of Homelink than a 2013.....wtf???

2011 X6M tried all the steps you guys mentioned, short of turning green and throwing a effing brick through my windshield, I will try ordering a repeater . FYI I have a brand new 2014 chamberlain HD930EVC garage door opener.

I am taking X6M to dealership for unrelated work and they are doing a software update / I drive maybe that will change the home link version.........doubt it.

I programed my 2011 X5 and just the other day my 2014 X5 to my garage door. Here is what I did:

Make sure you clear the old program out of the mirror. You do this by pressing any 2 buttons until it blinks rapidly.

If you have a new garage door opener with a rotating code like I do you need to bring it in the garage.

Press the learning button on the door opener and then press the button that you want to have active on the mirror until it blinks rapidly. You should be set. If not, repeat the process always clearing any code from the mirror. I do not program it from the remote because it only accepts the rolling code from the opener therefore it can't program your homelink, only the opener can if you have a rolling code.

My wife has properly coded her Tahoe and now her 2012 Q7. I can't get my 2010 X5M to work. Last time I had a loaner 3 series from BMW I couldn't get that one either. I'll try the suggestions mentioned earlier.

Your 2010 is probably not much different than my past 2011. If it has a rolling code, you need to bring it into the garage, press the learn button on the garage opener and then press the button on the mirror that you want your garage door opener to work with until it flashes rapidly. No rolling code, it should work with the remote against the mirror, same procedures. Make sure you clear all codes out of the mirror first by pressing down on two buttons on the mirror and leave then pressed until the light flashes rapidly. Hope this helps!

It's been a while as I really didn't care anymore but I tried all different ways. Thank you for the reply. I'll try again this weekend.

I've tried this before and almost had a mental breakdown. I'm afraid to try it again.
