Error gear oil temperature too high- performance reduced- not!

Hi guys

Recently got the message above, guess it was a glitch, but curious to hear your opinion.

Wifey and I were driving home (X5 40d, 282.000 km, gear oil changed with the gear box at 262.000 ish last September) on a German Autobahn, speed 130-160 km/h, outside temperatures like 28 degree C, a/c set to 19 degree.

It was her turn to drive, and at a point the a/c ceased working, I set it to max and immediately BING! Gear oil temperature too high, performance will be reduced.
Seriously?

We slowed down obviously, but did not experience any loss in power, and no error message at all could be found in the system...instead the a/c went back to its former glory.

Btw., last week our beast passed the technical check required to be registered in Germany with flying colours.
