E70 X5M or F14 X5 50 - what say you?
Hello All,
Long time lurker and 1st time poster. I am wanting to get some opinions from folks that have some experience with the X5. I am looking at buying an X5, however I don't know if I want to buy an E70 X5M or a newer F15 X5 50. The power isn't that big of a difference between the 2 for me but the fit and finish and possible refinements in the newer F15 are what I am trying to make sure I am not missing out on if I were to buy an E70 X5M. I also don't believe the gas mileage in the end is that different especially if you stay in boost most of the time. I would say that I am a 50/50 highway to city driver so I expect to be on the lower end of the gas mileage estimates most of the time. I am currently in a 2010 Lexus LS460 which is not a car I would wish upon anyone. If I could drive it through the front door of Lexus NA and demand a refund, I would. Fit and finish is below par and the driving experience ranks up there with watching paint dry. Gas mileage for city driving isn't great either. If I buy an E70 M then I plan to buy one that is still under warranty. Regardless of what I buy, I will definitely look to get an extended warranty before the factory warranty expires. Through the great resources on this site, I've already pinged Jeff Steel at Passport for guidance on pricing for both I do have 2 small children that my wife totes around in her Odyssey so Im not too worried about baby seats but I suppose some insight from that perspective couldn't hurt. Lastly, I'm not interested in modding as it will be my daily driver. Thankfully my other toy is a 475hp 2nd gen supra that is a total money pit, but tons of fun All comments and guidance are appreciated! Mike Last edited by wmr71; 01-17-2017 at 10:30 PM.. |

Hmm, well there are pros and cons to each of course.
Here's my .02... The E70 is still a stout looking SUV, but it looks dated compared to the F15...I think. The next generation X5 will be out in 1.5 years or so, meaning the E70 will soon be 2 generations old. If that matters? With that said, unless you get the DHP (Dynamic Handling Package - rare/hard to find option), or to a lesser extent the Adaptive M Suspension on the F15, handling/driveability is said to be pretty disappointing on the F15, and that's compared to a non-M E70. Have you driven either of these? I'd recommend driving each before deciding. I think all of your other comments are pretty much true. While HP is 110 more in the E70 X5M, performance is not that much different, the updated N63tu in the F15 50i is a great performer. And IMO sounds better than the S63...they have a distinctly different sound. I haven't been keeping up on prices but isn't an E70 X5M a fair amount less? If you go that route, I'd recommend a 2013 where you can get the optional LED headlights. Those go a long way in keeping the front end more modern looking. |

You need to drive them both. I went from a 2013 X6M to a 2016 X6 50i and I hated it. The E70/71 have a different drive feel. They are harder, stiffer, tighter and more beastly. The F15/16 are softer, floaty, cushy from a handling, suspension and steering standpoint. They have more gadgets and tech stuff but I prefer the driving experience. Coming from a Lexus, the F15 might work for you.

of course if I did go with the X5 50 then it would be optioned with DHP or at least the adaptive M suspension package
As far as ride comfort, I came out of a 2006 Lexus GS430 that was far from super smooth but I liked the sporty nature and power of the car but needed something bigger. I am 6-1 215 and with 3 other guys my size in the GS at the same time, it was tight. I went to the LS as it was definitely bigger but its soft and after a year of driving it, its safe to say its not my cup of tea thanks for all the comments thus far.....will try and get local here in Atlanta to drive an E70 X5M as I've driven both the F15 35 and 50 and like the ride on the 50 already |

Either way,..I think we both can agree that the E70 X5M is more "BMW" than the non-M F15. There is an old saying,..."there's no replacement for displacement"! Well, I'm here to say,..yes there is:,...The replacement for displacement is "twin turbos",...and and or "twin turbos and electric motors"! Just think,....50 years from now, the saying might be,..."there's no replacement for Voltage and Amps!"
