Lemforder vs Meyle HD

Looking to replace my front lower control arms. I have heard not so great things about the Lemforder Tension Struts. FCP Euro sells a kit made by both Lemforder and Meyle with the Meyle Tension Struts listed as HD. I've heard that means that the thrust bushing is solid vs fluid filled which seems to be the source of premature failure. Problem is there is also a separate tension strut sold by Meyle that's more expensive. Anyone know which is the right part?

Meyle Kit - BMW 4-Piece Control Arm Kit - Meyle E70CAKIT2
Lemforder Kit - BMW 4-Piece Control Arm Kit (E70 E71) - E70CAKIT
Meyle HD Tension Struts - BMW Control Arm - Meyle HD 3160500116HD. BMW Control Arm - Meyle HD 3160500115HD

thanks for anyone with experience!

Some parts from Meyle are ok, and some parts from Lemforder are ok.
I prefer OEM, if only the bushing is bad, replace them with OEM bushings or powerflex, the last option gives an easy replacement when worn out.

The Meyle kit is mixed "Meyle HD" and regular Meyle.

I went Meyle HD tension strut and Lemforder other control arm. I was hoping with the HD that Meyle beefed it up a bit since even OEM (Lemforder but different factory or line?) fails between 40-60k

Additionally, like you said Lemforder seems to be having issues with the tension struts and premature failure - even though people claim to have been following proper procedures and tightening with suspension loaded.

Meyle HD thrust (tension) arms, and all their HD products are good to go.

Most Lemforder/BMW thrust arms for all their cars have always the the problem using fluid filled bushings.

right but is there a big difference between the two different tension struts that Meyle HD makes? 3160500116HD/115HD and 3160500038HD/37HD. There is a decent price difference. The latter comes in their MeyleHD/Meyle mixed kit.

Ah I didnt catch that in your original post, unfortunately I barely skim everything on this forum now because of all the "what to look out for on xyz with 150k miles" posts or "HELP!" with generic codes attached and them clearly not searching for anything.

As for the differences in the Meyle HD part numbers, that is a very good question. Even Meyle doesn't seem to have anything on their site as far as I can tell. I'm sure they would have more info if you contact them on their website, but I would just buy the ~$100 HD's.

I'd say since you havent heard good things about Lemforder, just go with Meyle HD. Regular Meyle would be same design as Lemforder, OE design.

I deal with both brands and between Meyle HD and Lemforder, both have had great feedback. Im not sure what country they are made in and you can ask FCP, but some people do care about that. Many brands have factories all over the world and some areas are preferred over others.

There was a recent thread where people had issues with both brand after less than 5k miles. Its just not worth saving $ on parts that dont last, you'll be buying new parts and paying again for labor. Go with OEM, its much cheaper in the long run.

Not going to search for it, but there was a big thread, I think called suspension refresh, or something to that extent. Many members with both brands had issues with less than a year. I replaced my whole front suspension with OEM parts a year and a half ago, no issues.

There are no reported issues with Meyle HD that I have found anywhere. It looks like I am the only one with Meyle HD tension struts that commented in the thread you're referring to and they are doing great. Still too early to tell how long they last at only 17k miles.

Miles are more relevant than age when it comes to the tension struts and the $300 per side OEMs start to fail at 40-60k miles. Im not paying 3x the price for something doesnt last any longer, in fact im hoping the Meyle HDs outlast OEM.

BMW does not Manufacture any suspension items (among most items). They contract Lemforder, TRW, Corteco,Meyle and many other manufacturers depending on whoever they have a contract with. There are no "B" grades when made from the same Manufacturer. If you can find the logo/brand on the "BMW" arm, you'll then know who made it for BMW.

Keep in mind, most suspension pieces are now also made in Turkey, Poland, Romania and yes even China. The days of German Made products are getting slimmer.

Meyle HD is not a bad bet if you want something slightly better than OE.

I have the HD arms on the X5 and had them on my E39 as well. No issues.

As for the different Meyle HD part numbers for the arms, I would either reach out to FCP and ask, or just go on RealOEM, look up the part numbers and use that.

I have also used the Meyle Tension struts on both my F15 and e70 and no issues so far but only about 20K combined miles on them.
