Driver's door not shut! Car won't go!

This is my first BMW, so far everything is great.... few days ago I was shocked when the car won't drive, it stops itself after I step on the accelerator and sticking half of it's head out the parking lane from the side of the road and the the gear shift from "D" to "P" - after 3 times I saw that there's a messege saying the door's not shut properly!!! What a silly & stupid idea for BMW to have this function, this could have course a major accident! Lucky for me that the road was emty.

did you try closing your door? That always worked for me....

I think it is the exact opposite of a silly idea... It is a bit more dangerous to fall out of your car while driving than the car not driving while the door is open.

Yes it's the stupid door! It's closed, but not perfectly that's why the car won't move.

In that case why can't BMW just install the atomatic soft door close to all their cars as standard? or just lock the gear until you close it?

Normally the car won't start if the door is not closed properly

HUD should become standard equipment & warnings should display on the windshield whether HUD is enabled or not. Driver would thusly know immediately what's going on.
The next level of "intelligent" iDrive should recognize that if the driver's door is ajar, the car should be driveable with warning bells & flashing HUD display ( Driver is not going to fall out the door w/ hands on the steering wheel.) & the car should be rendered undriveable if any of the passenger doors are ajar, again w/ audible warnings & flashing HUD.

The car starts when the door is open, but you have to step on the brake. I always do this when warming up the engine.

You can still reverse the car when the door is not closed properly, but you can't drive forward.

Rayvkt,
your right.
However we can't select a gear unless the door is properly shut, happens quite often when I want to reverse
