Help: installing x5m retrofit big brake kit
I was told by the dealer that the entire rear axle and hub have to come apart to install the rear portion of the x5m big brake kit on my 2011 x5 35D
does anyone have any tips on how to change the rear heat shields without removing the hubs? any help would be appreciated https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...t/34112348054/ |

Lol dealers are so funny!
The rear calipers have special hangers that move them further out in order to fit the new larger rotor, the calipers are exactly the same caliper as the standard X5. As far as the rear rotors the x5M and the f15M are swappable directly but as far as the standard X5 parking brake setup I'm not sure if it is different between the two. I've heard the hub has a different diameter between the two M and non M so that's where the big changes may be. |

Is it even worth the effort installing rear M brakes? Aside from being blue, what are the benefits given the installation hassles and pricier replacements down the road?
Fronts are a different story, obviously. |

As said above, carrier is different on the rear (caliper is same) and you'll need new hub since the center bore is 72.5mm vs 74.1mm on non M vehicles. I'd check RealOem on the internal brake setup but I think you'll be OK on that.
I guess you could get the rear disc bored out to 74.1mm if the internals of the handbrake/shoes are same. |

I was going to say the rear hub size is different, so how are you going to use the X5M rotors without changing the hub (and getting centering rings for your wheels)

All that work for rear brakes that are going to do very little work and look like standard calipers. I get doing the fronts but honestly I think it's a waste of time and money for the rears.

Also you'd have matching rotors so I think it's worth it for a complete look. |

It's worth it IMHO, not only do they look better than the OE rotors... I have noticed an significant improvement in stopping since swapping over to the F85 rotors

For the fronts, sure. The rears not so much considering what is involved to retrofit. Let's not forget, if the X5 only sees city driving it's a pointless endeavor from a performance standpoint. Most people aren't handling their vehicles beyond the stock braking performance.

If it were me, I would either go with an aftermarket BBK that is engineered to complement the stock X5 35i rear, OR go with the full X5M front and rear.
Rationale is that if you only go with the X5M front, you would likely have a front brake bias, where you are triggering the front ABS prematurely and thereby compromising the overall braking performance of the vehicle. There are existing articles from notable brake suppliers like Stoptech on this issue. |
