Reverse with door open ???

Picked up a new X5 50i and notice I cannot back up with the door open? Transmission will automatically engage P after moving a few inches.

Rather annoying.

Anyone have this issue as well?

Thanks in advance.

I think its actually a safety feature, happens when you try that in drive as well.

More of a safety issue to not allow it. I can think of a large number of issues why I need to be able to do it.

Every other car I've ever owned allows this.

Yes, verified drive as well. How utterly annoying.

So all a a guy(or gal) who wants to car jack me needs to do is hold my door open even a crack and I'm not moving.

Or when I tinted my windows and drove past my toll and had to reverse 2 ft.

Or to verify my children's bikes aren't under my truck obscured from my mirrors or the crap back up cameras.

Why don't car companies let people drive anymore.

Thanks for the reply.

Wow I never noticed that. I don't like this lol I'm not into car companies restricting what I can do with my car. Especially when I spend top dollar on it. Why can't a car just be a car. anymore?? This is highly annoying.

It saved me once. Was in drive and did not realize it and opened the door.

Alas, they (BMW) are crazy about things like this and yet you can still open the hatch while in drive and/or moving at a slow speed. THAT makes no sense.

You can drive or reverse with door open, but have keep one foot on the brake, and the other on gas pedal. I have done it many times.

Yes indeed. Once, I pressed the wrong button while stopped at a large intersection right before green arrow. Looked pretty stupid turning left with tailgate open. You can't close it from inside, and I wasn't going to get out to close it, being first in line to turn left.
On multiple ocasions, I would come out of the store, drop groceries in the trunk, hit the close button, and start driving just before tailgate is fully closed (yes, I am that quick, hehe). Unfortunately, the tailgate stops dead in tracks when car starts moving. Pretty stupid...

Yes, you cannot go forward with the door open either. Safety option.

Just found out about this annoyance this past weekend. I opened the door because I was only going to back up a couple feet. And noticed that it just revved and revved. I'll try and see if it will work with the seat belt on because it could be quite dangerous to be able to disable a vehicle merely by opening the door.

ps -- get your X5 coded and you can have the interior button open and close the door even while you're moving.

Pretty sure you can if your seat belt is on. I agree that this feature is dumb, as well as the joystick shifter.

Already tried it, it doesn't force your shift when you're at speed. Even at 5 mph it won't stop you. Only at 1-3 mph

Thanks for the bravery. I was starting to get scared I would have to do it on my way home. This system seems a bit over-protective though.

i found this out yesterday , i felt my car was a little to close to the curb so i decided i would get out and re park. I opened my door just to gauge how far i was from the sidewalk because the idiot in front of me was paroled all crooked. When i opened the door and reversed a little i noticed i wasn't moving when i looked at the screen the car was in park. Took me a couple of time to figure out the car was putting a no no to open door parking job.

I will try it with my seat belt

I remember wondering what will happen if I hit the Park button. Althought the software developer side of me was saying nothing will happen, I still had hesitation to push that "P" button at speed.

this happened to me last week. I was a little shocked at first then noticed the screen in the dash had an icon that made me realize it was the car. I thought I had run into something at first as the car moved back a little then came to an abrupt stop. Kind of stupid if you ask me.
