anyone connect a 12V air pump to battery?

I need to get an air pump for my inflatable. There is not always an electrical hook up available or convenient so I need to run off my X6M Battery. I have 2 options...1) being a 120V high pressure pump and a large inverter capable of 1500W or 2)which I prefer- get a high pressure 12 V pump to hook to the car battery. These pump draw too much power to be plugged into a lighter socket (20A peak). Has anyone ever used this type of 12V pump hooked to the battery? I am hoping I can just hook it up through the engine bay where the positive terminal is and ground on the vehicle. Will this work or will I need to hook directly to the battery in the rear?

Do you have the specs on the pump you intend on using? What's its max draw? I would think connecting under hood would be good as long as you keep the car running while your pump is running. The connectors under hood are meant for boosting the vehicle, which means it can take or deliver some high amps. You just wouldn't want to run it down to the point of not being able to restart the car.

20A is the max draw.

You would have room to spare. The cable running to the boost post is capable of the full output of the alternator which is around 190 amp. If your battery is in good shape you should be able to run the pump without the engine running for 5 minutes or so. Me, I would keep the car running just because it's easier on the alternator to keep the battery toped off than to bring it from a low state of charge.

I have not tried. However I do charge battery with charger on x5 with terminals in front. The connections are in the front for charging purposes (convenience), so no need to go to battery on the rear.

In Dubai, the drivers need to re-inflate the tires after air removal for dune blasting with a pump. This is a pic of Toyotas that have the portable air compressors attached to battery (assume directly). Yes the engines were running ( as re-enforced by RWilky).
