Another new guy!
Hey folks, figured I'd post an intro thread and say hello officially. I just traded in our 2014 328d for a 2010 X5M. I honestly had been looking for an M-Sport 50i, but the price on those was crazy high, and this M came in right around the same price. We traded a 2012 X3 M Sport for the sedan, but the sedan was just too small. So, back into an SUV, this time the one we (I) wanted...
Anyway, the vehicle is in pretty good shape, low miles (32K) and cosmetically beautiful. Has a couple of tasteful mods, some not as much... I plan to take care of a few things to make her 110% and then a few more mods until she's "perfect". Of course, there are two concerns I have, one is minor, the other has me a little stressed. We test drove the truck a couple weeks ago, and then went down to pick it up. I did a good city drive when I first looked at it, and it felt good. But after picking it up and putting some miles on her (drove it to Key West for the weekend) we noticed a pretty loud clunk over bumpy city streets... Has me kind of nervous, but haven't had a chance to look at it yet... Also, the Homelink isn't working... No response at all and the little LED doesn't light up... (fuse is good). Not sure on that one... Otherwise it feels ok and everything appears to be in order. This vehicle is for my wife, so just hope it turns out to be reliable. Anyway, thanks for the read (long I know, sorry)...

Jon…nice! So…how does it feel to have a Silver vehicle….I've only known you to have Alpine White I knew this post was coming sooner or later! Let me be the first here to say 'Congratulations!' Welcome to the X5 club….in your case X5M. Vehicle looks fantastic. I like the 21's - much better than the stock wheels (not really a big fan of the stock X5M wheels).
Homelink programming has been tricky for quite a few X5 owners, including me….I was finally able to program mine following the steps at the link below (post #6), specifically step 5 where the 'learn' code button is initiated - http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...light=homelink Last edited by jiggz; 08-31-2014 at 10:41 PM.. |

Jeff, thanks man! I really wanted this one, but had to secure a sale of the ZHP first and get the right numbers on this thing.
Anyway, we're pretty happy, but the suspension clunk has me a little concerned. The car has some really nice mods on it, so I'm thinking it was lowered at some point, and then maybe turned back to stock before selling...? I have to investigate some more... As for the home link, I already figured it out. I had only pressed the start button once (like the manual says)... But it needs to actually have the engine running... Lame...

Hi Jon and welcome! Awesome M! Love the yellow brake calipers and carbon fiber front spoiler! Are your mirrors painted or carbon fiber? Look forward to seeing your upcoming mods and hopefully the clunking isn't anything serious.

Thanks Hal... The mirrors are carbon fiber as well. I'd love to add the CF rear diffuser to round it all out (that's how my ZHP is set up).
I'm glad to hear some of you like the yellow. To be honest, I don't like it at all, but my wife is nuts about it... She admitted to me that colored brake calipers drive her insane. She said it actually turns her on... WTF?!!?! So, the calipers will stay yellow. For my wife's happiness (mine) I might even add lights and glitter.

Any idea what the suspension clunk might be? Does your X have any warranty left or has it expired? I must admit I have 3 years of warranty left (1 from the purchase, 2 for CPO) and I am still a bit creeped out by owning this vehicle. I read some of the threads on here and what repairs cost and I wonder if I'm in over my head The ZHP is so simple and basic compared to these vehicles. Glad you got Homelink figured out. It was certainly more work than programming it on my ZHP! |

Yeah, man, thanks... Not sure on the suspension, it is fairly loud, and makes a bit of a rattle noise too, perhaps a ball joint? I have a suspicion that the thing was lowered before and then put back to stock before being sold. I have to try and get under it soon though, I'd like to have it handled before I leave...
I called my client advisor with the VIN when we first saw it and he said there was actually an originally purchased extended warranty, which is still in effect, so I have to take advantage of that. Just have to figure out details of how it works. I too am concerned with the cost of ownership.. Apparently ///M means ///Maintenance and ///Money... Not very thrilled, but as soon as I get the suspension handled, I'll be a lot more confident.

That would be great if you could take advantage of an extended BMW warranty on your new X5M. When I bought my ZHP it still had a CPO and paid extended maintenance….that was really nice! I'm now wondering if I should have paid for the extended maintenance plan that was offering to me at vehicle sale?
I think in my first 2-3 weeks of ownership my X did weird things almost every day that weirded me out. Oh well….we all knew this would be a sensitive vehicle to own….there are trade-offs right? On the plus side you have a killer vehicle to drive! |

Here's a quick photo of the ZHP alongside the new X, shortly before the new owner came and picked up the ZHP.

Congrats on the new beast! Love that colour, and the wheels are some of my favorites. I do hope you have an extended warranty of some sort, as those puppies aren't cheap when they break.

Congrats but why did you give up the 2014 328d?? I have a gorgeous 2014 328d in EBII and LOVE the gas mileage - now getting low 50s on the highway! And I also have a 2011 X5 35d too - LOVE that too - and getting almost 30mpg (29.7 to be exact)!

It's give and take. Some of us would much rather sacrifice MPG for power/performance. Nobody is doubting the good MPG of a BMW diesel but you give up a lot of performance going that route as well.

Honestly, the reason we got rid of the D is honestly because there's just no need for that many vehicles. The 328d, as well as the X5, are my wife's vehicle. I had a 330i ZHP that was my toy, but I just sold that too. I'm gone for work about half the year, so for us to have any more than 2 cars is just silly.
So, we traded the 328d for the X5 and I sold my ZHP for no reason other than I was offered a LOT of money for it... I might pick up another car the next time I get back home, we'll see what sort of options present themselves.
