Newer vs. Fewer Miles?
Hey guys,
New to the forum, so forgive me if this has been discussed. My wife and I are considering purchasing a pre-owned X5. My budget looks like it'll put me into a low mileage 2008-2010 model (30,000-40,000 miles) or a higher mileage 2011-2013 (70,000-80,000 miles). I really have no preference on engine. Prefer the performance of the V8, but like the fuel economy in the 6 or diesel. Question: Should I consider earlier models with low mileage, or should I place more value in the later model years? Any other input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Regarding the 2011+ engines, the I6 is only marginally better on fuel economy than the V8 - 16/23 vs. 14/20. I'm currently looking and have driven both models, and the V8 definitely feels like the proper engine for this 5000 pound vehicle. I have not driven the pre-LCI I6 or V8, but they have less HP & TQ than the newer models. You say engine doesn't matter but it might if you drive them all Maintenance is going to be costly regardless of what model you get. Even an older, low mileage X5 is still out of warranty, and presents a potentially costly vehicle to own. Good luck - there's lots of choose from out there. |

Personally, I usually go for vehicles with higher miles that are newer. I just always make sure they still have warranty on them, since the last thing I want is an out-of-warranty X5.

I have owned BMW's over time and everybody in the BMW world usually states but the newest lowest milage BMW you can afford. Newer cars have less issues based on revisions BMW makes to correct chronic problems. Cars does not develop issues based on age, car issues happens with mileage or amount used. The more miles the more issues will become apparent. With the lack of standard maintenance(BMW has very long and unrealistic maintenance windows) and the replacing of metal parts with plastic ones, you will find that things that would last 100k+ need to be replaced at shorter intervals(search on BMW cooling components).
I am not saying all high mileage cars are bad but with BMW's higher mileage will mean more costs in repairs. Personally I would avoid MY 1-2 of these cars. They usually have the most issues. Also, check the production date of a car. Just because it says 2011 does not mean it was made in 2011. Example, my 2012 x5 rolled off the assembly line on April 18, 2011 which was the very first of the MY12s to roll of the line. So you could be looking at a car which could be older than the MY suggests.

Okay, I'll get a few together.
In the meantime, how about some honest input on the third row seat option? I like the option but it sure reduces the pool of available vehicles! |

Works great for small kids, and carseats...but if you try to put full size people back there they won't be your friend for long.

Third row is great for kids. May be a bit snug for bigger kids over 12. Certainly too tight for adults. Third row also comes with auto leveling which is great for towing.

FWIW, I had my girls (ages 7 & 9) climb into the 3rd row of an E70 for sale at local dealer, and they couldn't get out of there fast enough. Which makes me wonder why I'm even looking for 3rd row... |

When we have the cousins with is 9,9 and my boys 5.5 and 8 battle for the third row nonstop. We drove 5 hours and not a single complaint. I am sure that would be different story when they are 15
