Wheels and tires options..Need opinions please.
I have a 2012 X5M. Looking to upgrade the wheels and tires this summer. Looking at various options:
1. Get 20" wheels and use the RFTs that came with the SUV. Have significant amount of thread left in them. 2. Get 20" wheels and ditch the RFTs and get new tires. 3. 22" wheels and definitely new tires: Pirrelli Pirelli PZero in 285/30/22(front)335/25/22 (rear). Would like to go this route but the price difference between option 1 and 3 is about 3K. Know that option 3 will give me the 'badass SUV' look. Ride quality might suffer slightly because of the smaller sidewall. I realize that "cost/benefit" of anything is very subjective and in this case only I can decide if the 3K premium is worth it for me if I look at this purely from financial perspective. I was wondering if there any opinions on advantages/disadvantages between the three options other than price. Thanks in advance. |

Difference in ride between 20" run flats and 22" non runflats will be negligible. Price difference doesn't have to be 3K if you don't want it to be, but can be a lot more. May be able to flip your existing set to help offset the acquisition cost.
You may want to consider alternatives before 22" wheels. For instance - have you lowered your vehicle yet? The impact and improvement in looks of the 22" wheels is significantly diminished if the vehicle isn't lowered, at least in my not so humble opinion. Lowered, you may fall in love with your stock 20" wheels all over again. Take that 3K and drop it on a set of KW's. Don't screw around with springs first on the M - you won't be happy. |

I went with 20s OP. lighter and more tire options if you from a HP Category.
22s look killer when it's lowered. Ride comfort won't be sacrificed that much. But it's all about the structural integrity of who makes the wheel and what you like most. Lots of companies. Who is going to be there for you if something goes wrong. I would probably stay away from ADV it service is a priority for you. |

Thanks for replies guys.. Thinking of lowering it too when I get the new wheels. Purely from economic perspective I'm leaning towards the 20" and using the stock RFTs for now. Can always buy alternative tires once the thread on the stocks start wearing out...

stlcity - I've been going through similar with move to cold climate requiring getting snow tires. I took my OEM RFTs off the stock rims and installed snow tires (SO much fun to drive our M's in the snow). Next step is to find replacement summer wheels to remount my RFTs.
Have you (or anyone) found a good, cost-effective place to source wheels? I'm combing the net, and I really don't want to spend >$5K on a set of wheels in the 20x10" & 20x11" sizes. |

I've been scouring the internet for the past couple of weeks looking for cast wheels in 20x10 and 20x11 sizes. So far I've only come across these options:-
1. Concept One Wheels CS-55 2. Rohana RC10, RC20, RC22 and RC26 3. X6M Style 300 Replicas 4. Forgestar CF5 and CF10 Are there any other options out there that aren't forged made?

If you care about performance or comfort, I'd consider replacing the RFT tires. (Yes comfort and performance can be in the same sentence)
Outside of that, if cost is an issue, keep what you have and run into the ground, and upgrade then. You'll even save some money getting rid of the RFT's rather than replacing with like equivalents. Like the continental DWS as an example, and a number of other good non-RFT tires. |

I'm leaning toward forgestars too. What size tires are you considering?

Or these: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....er+H%2FP+Sport Agree with the Vorsteiner being expensive. Since I wanted to stay with 20X12in rear my choices were fairly limited for cast wheels. Last edited by stlcity; 03-06-2014 at 06:38 AM.. |

The OEM rears are 20x11 and if you put 315/35-20 tires (OEM size) on a 20x12 wheel they'll look stretched. If you want to use your OEM tires then I'd recommend sticking with the OEM wheel sizes 20x10 in the front and 20x11 in the rear.

The Vorsteiners are flow forged and are not load rated for an X5. I checked with them when I was looking. Another option not mentioned yet is OZ Racing Superturismo Dakar. They come in a 20x10, 20x11 fitment. The Forgestar while cheap, aren't actually forged. Rennen are forged wheels but not sure about the quality. Ive been looking at BC Forged HB15 or 29. Still not decided... Last edited by zeroboot; 03-11-2014 at 11:33 PM.. |

OP I just got a set of custom 20s from VELOS. They came out beautiful. Offset is killer and they are probably some of the lightest 20s I have ever owned.
Engineering and load rates by Velos to ensure no issues. Fully forged. Pics to come. Keep in mind these were also custom made to clear the brembo 405mm BBK. |

Offsets are not disclosed to me. Ill take some pics tomorrow for everyone to see.
Size wise it was 20x10 and 20x12. To accommodate my all season DWS and be able to throw some neater summer tires if I choose. The 315/35 tire still fits nice and flush. |

I originally wanted to go with the Forgestar F14 but they take 8 weeks to make and if she jacks up a wheel, it will take forever to get a replacement. I just ordered a set of Nitto Motivos from Discount Tire's Ebay promo

That will probably happen with all aftermarket wheel manufacturers, styles get old and people stop stocking them and you have to wait forever for the replacement to get in...if they even make them at that time. One of the benefits of going with OEMs is that it takes a lot longer for the wheel supply to dry up.
