X5M Engine Replaced by dealer... Would you buy it?
(I attached the service history)
Ok. I just found out that the X5M I want to buy has had the engine replaced by BMW. They told me that after they bought the vehicle, they had the engine replaced due to an oil issue. The vehicle is still under factory warranty, but would you still buy it?

Factory warranty is a factory warranty. What's the concern? Many engine swaps may even come with an extended warranty on that powertrain component too. Providing additional piece of mind.

Well, when a fairly new vehicle had the engine replaced at or before 10k miles then you have to pause. I understand that it is covered under warranty, but your peace of mind is no longer 100% after hearing that.

Hmmm. I wonder if it was truly a new engine, a re-manufctured engine or a short block. The service history with "crankcase manufacturing defect" is kind of cryptic.
Do yourself a favor and call Jerry Lytton, the Service Director at Assael/Monrovia. dk

In 10k, I don't think there is much maintenance needed if at all. You are governed by the check engine light and what the idrive tells you to do in terms of maintenance, not before.
I think BMW at one point was going for 15k miles before an oil change, it's now 10k miles on 2014+ models. So yeah, I wouldn't expect any service on 0-10k miles. An engine replaced under warranty, is still an engine replaced, and still covered under warranty. I'd do it. But then again, used BMW's are a dime a dozen. Don't find what you're looking for, extend out a few states and odds are you will... |

If you are well connected go for it, my friend put a deposit on a Macan and the dealer told him at least a year without any solid delivery dates or even a production slot reserved

But then you jump into the whole risk of buying the first year of a brand new model...

Yeah, new power plant ...I'd be ok with that.
As far as CPO, i had mine CPO'd ... increased the price like 3500.00 I dont recall exactly. would not have considered it without the 100k warranty. I recently had it in for warranty repair(oil leak @ upper oil pan) 20hr job. I asked if cpo would have covered, Service said yessir. Push the CPO issue or ask @ bmw usa. |

I found one locally that has ZERO issues and the warranty is good until 11/16. I'm going to see it on Sat, and, if it checks out, I'm driving off with it. I'll extend the warranty some time in 2016 before it expires (I have a dealer that will sale it to me at cost).
Stay tuned...

They explained to me why they stopped doing it. Basically, they do a lot of export business and since CPO's are void outside of the US, they were losing money on it and the buyer couldn't take advantage of it. That's their story (oh well).

CPO
Reason BMW dealers do not CPO M vehicles is because it's not cost beneficial, it cost the dealer $3k plus labor and hard parts to CPO an M car, thats $4-$6k for CPO, takes the BMW dealer out of the price game, they have to ask too much for a car that's been CPO'd, making the vehicle to hard to market and sell at profit, if it turn out they cant sell car and have to wholesale it they lose a large portion of the monies paid for CPO, and now CPO are with the customer and not car the cars value at wholesale is not increased, they will always CPO a vehicle if you want to add it to the cost, just M cars cost double what a non M car costs to CPO.....Reason BMW changed the rules of CPO cars is on the wholesale market any car purchased at auction that was under CPO still carried the warranty, thus BMW dealers were competing against non BMW dealers offering cars with remaining CPO warranty left, stops Joe Blow Auto Sales from being able to sell a CPO vehicle and not be a BMW dealer....hope this helps
