I hope you can see some of these shots. I follow this guy on Flickr and recently he posted these test shots from an LG V10 cellphone. I'm stunned at the quality of these images. Cellphone cameras have come a very long way.

If you're familiar with Fstoppers, they have a few articles on cellphone photography that puts a lot of DSLRs to shame.

Anyone on here sell their photos? I'm looking into dabbling a bit, but not sure where to start.

I dabble, selling a print here and there. I got on with Getty a few years ago and that results in some sales. Still, altogether it's not near enough to pay the rent. I'm hoping that the sales will exceed equipment cost in the next year or so.

I got affilitated with Getty through Flickr, but Getty no longer trolls Flickr.

Selling in galleries can be very good, BUT you usually have to pay for wall space and, of course, printing. You can get a very good Canon Pixma Pro-100 printer for $150 after rebates. It'll do excellent 13x19" prints and you can mount them to gator board, or frame them simply to sell.

Looking at your Flickr, I'm reminded about my comment about your stuff seeming dark. Most buyers are looking for bright and punchy. Your style is going to display best in a gallery that specializes in dark art.

Generally, selling photos is a tough way to make an extra buck. Landscapes sell the best, but it needs to be iconic to sell to the overall public, or something of great local interest (we have lots of that in Colorado) to sell for display in local houses. Your past work doesn't aim at those markets.

Street photography is a hard sale, because EVERYBODY is doing it. However, there is a lot of it in galleries. If you can get on a wall, you might makes some connections and get lucky.

Some people "dabble" in wedding and senior pix. I just don't get it. To do it right requires lots of time. The people that ask me, knowing that I'm a photographer, are expecting me to give it away. I tell them that they can't afford me. If they insist, I give them the name of a top wedding photographer. Still, some people go at it quite casually. I've been at "events" (reunions, etc.) where my equipment far exceeded the official "photographer's" equipment. I even met one shooting JPEGs and getting paid (probably just a few hundred bucks). She just shot and posted them to a site.

I have seen a pro shooting auto events, like and autocross. He had a site and you could order pix of yourself. Smugmug and some other sites let you set up an automated system. Your interest in autos could lead to something like that.

Anyway, it's not easy. The full-time pros are suffering from all the competition from us "serious" amateurs. Dabbling over a period of years can start to add up and you can slowly build a reputation and start to pay for your fun.

I've never sold my stuff. I refuse a lot of work because I enjoy shooting photos. Photography for me is what I do to unwind from work and pursue the things I like and like to do.

As soon as you start taking jobs with your camera you are now shooting to other people's expectations and not your own. I can't think of a better way to ruin something I enjoy and turn it into yet another stressor.

Now if I could shoot whatever I wanted; the way I wanted and people would pay me for the prints or buy them in a Gallery somewhere then I would be ok with it.

On a smaller scale you can submit your stuff to stock photo sites. People tell me that if you build up a big enough library of stuff that gets licensed often you can make an ok income.

I've only had fleeting ambitions to ever make any money with my camera. I could never replace my income no matter how good I was with a camera.

Like Dave said; there is a lot of competition with people who dabble and people like me who give it away to my friends, family and do some charity with the camera on occasion.
I also have better equipment then most pros I ever see.

For me, it would be more of me shooting what I want and selling prints and licenses on the photos. I have no interest in shooting weddings or events or portraits or anything along those lines. Granted, I've not been known to turn away a request to shoot someone's car for a few bucks, but even so.

I'm going to buy a few prints of my own photos and see how they turn out and maybe go from there.

Good idea. Put your own stuff on your own walls and see how people react.

See if you can find a local printer that understands your work and can produce it well. Try different papers, because that can really change the look of the final product. The online printers are okay, but there's nothing like seeing a printer's work and saying what you'd like in your own art.

Don't be intimidated about printing your own. The Canon Pixma Pro-100 comes with a LR plug-in that makes printing on various sizes and papers a breeze. I actually calibrated my prints to my monitor with only a handful of test shots. The user interface is intuitive and easy. The printer takes up 30" on the desk, but it's a very good use of real estate.

I do, but not in the way that most people do. I get contracted as an event photographer. Im brought out to various tracks/rallies and paid to shoot for a single team/driver.

I got started by going to events for fun and posting photos to Flickr and tagging anyone I could find. This was ~2009 or 2010.

I liked the idea of hanging your stuff on the wall though.

Not quite camera gear or a photograph. But I finished putting together my new home workstation/battlestation. Super excited.

Heads up if you're thinking of buying from a Canadian dealer. Better do it soon.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm a little surprised, given that Canon's margins are determined by yen/Canadian $ ratios, not US/Canadian dollar ratios. The US dealers must have been complaining.

The piece says lens prices will be raised. We'll see what happens with the high-end bodies.

I had put my money on Google letting Nik die like they do just about everything else when they bought it. Not sure if this proves me wrong or is just the harbinger of its death.

Oh I agree. It hasn't been updated since they got bought out. All they really wanted was Snapseed and they left the pro stuff to wither. Still, I haven't found a better tool for B&W than Silver Efex.

You might try DxO's FilmPack. You can get a 30-day free trial. I just loaded Nik and need to try out SilverEfex for myself.

Nice, but I never understood why people put their CPUs right on the desk. That's some valuable real estate for productivity. Put it on the floor and open that space up!!! U need access to your USB plug? Run a hub up, much cleaner.

The floor is carpet and I have a cat that likes to scratch things. It's basically just protection

Honestly, it's just a case and no one cares what it looks like under your desk. let the cat scratch it! Are you concerned about the wires?

I'm a stickler for productivity and my desk is the size of a long folding table. Desk real estate is almost as valuable as home real estate.

edit: My work computer has it's own little stand off to the side. You could do that if you want to keep it off the ground.
