Strange noise and vibration
Ok I have only had my 2011 x5 35i for a few months and things have been pretty solid. Except now it makes a loud humming noise and has vibrations. The funny thing is that it is most noticeable when I am going 30 mph up to 40 mph. My first thought was wheel bearing but I find that it is worse when the ac is running. What the heck is this? Has anyone had this issue and what is the fix? My mind is leaning towards transfer case but my wallet is hoping it is not.

The transfer-case should only vibrate when your turning sharply and you'll feel it at slow parking lot speeds. So if your going in a strait line then your probably ok. Mine only vibrated when turning and once I replaced it problem went away.
Check your drive shaft if your vibration is only felt while moving. Also the harmonic balancer could be going. The rubber can fail and when a load is placed on it can make it go crazy. It's an expensive part but I have an extra if you need one. Look at your harmonic balancer and check for wobbling. |
