Smart Key Programming for X5

I was told that I cannot get a 2nd key made for my X5 because the dealership has upgraded the vehicle's software. Anyone knows what this means?

Try another dealer. That doesn't sound right. What happens if you lost your only key? My dealer only had 1 key so they ordered a new one for me - when it came in, I went back and had it programmed.

I had to get my x5 updated to the newest software for tuning reasons.
It was a 2011 and had never been updated.
The dealer (different one than the one that did my update)
Had finally sent me a second key that they had to order from the factory 6 months later.
The key works fine.
That dealer of your is just being lazy or are idiots.
Most likely both

Unlike the poster above me, I didn't have to go to the dealer to program it everything was in working order when it arrived from Germany.

The previous owner only turned in 1 key - could that be the reason I had to go to the dealer? They said they had to reprogram it so that the car would only work with my 2 keys since that other one is out there somewhere.

I bought the x5 CPO and it only came with 1 key which is why I called every day for 6 months to get the second key I deserved.
They actually sent a key to the wrong address and couldn't track it down.
They finally sent me a second replacement and I never went to the dealer.
Go to a different dealer. Or even just call a different dealer.
They are just being assholes for some reason

Your car gets programmed with your keys signature so the car knows that the key is a valid key. Any dealer can order you a key as long as you are a valid owner. An x5 can hold up to 10 separate keys at one time. The dealer can remove any key so that it will no longer work with the car. The physical key can open the car but it cannot be started. I had major electrical issues with my 2011 x5 and the key was one of many issues I had. I learned a great deal from my SA about the keys before they lemoned it.

Is it possible to get a 2nd Smart Key done from a 3rd party? The dealership's price is steep.
