Get rid of your runflats !!!!!
I have a 745i and a 2011 x5 with the 20s. I just put on non runflat winter tires on my x5 and all i can say is the difference is day and night. The ride is very close to being as smooth as my 7 series. I cant go back to runflats after this experience.

The dunlop run flats ride nicely. The bridgestone runflats are firmer. I've owned BMW's and prefer a firm - I can feel the actual pavement - ride.
Now, everyone harps about getting rid of runflats. There's an obvious compromise and the most important one IMO is safety. You will NEVER catch me, nor my family changing a tire by the side of the road. It's unsafe and just a PITA. For those with a family, and who do not want to change their own tire/wheel in the event of a flat, the runflats are an excellent option. Do they weigh more? Ride a bit harsher? Cost a bit more? Sure, but they are also a welcome technology that I'm happy with. I just got done buying a set of Bridgestone take-off's from a bimmer owner and switching from the Dunlops to the Bridgestone's caused bit of increased harshness. My first reaction was, hey I like how communicative these tires are - not a big deal to me at all. However I'm more sport oriented and my wife has NOT noticed a difference. Win win in my book.

I have the 18s (non-sport package). The RFTs in that configuration are not bad; I can imagine that the story would be entirely different with 20s.

Ours came with the Michelin runflats, and we wore them out in just under 30,000 miles. Since my wife is the primary driver, we decided runflats were the way to go for replacement. My only real complaints on the Michelins were the road noise toward the end of their life (quite loud) and the low mileage life.
If I were the primary driver, I'd have opted for the Conti DWS tires. But I'm also willing to mess with a flat tire. So for us the runflat debate is more about safety than maximum performance. And frankly, it is a 5,000lb SAV, so it isn't really performance oriented to begin with (regardless of what BMW marketing says.....) For real performance, I jump on my Ducati....

No doubt changing from runflats to regular tires makes a huge difference with 20s...better handling, quicker transitions, less harshness. I did this on my previous M and it was very noticeable. I haven't done it on my current 50i, but only because I promised my wife I wouldn't.
By the way, modern high-quality tires have stiff enough sidewalls and sturdy build construction that blowouts are rare, and flats can be reinflated with a pump that buys you time to get to a tire shop for a patch. I've had a number of flats but never a blowout...you aren't going to see a Michelin tire delaminate stranding you on the side of the freeway.

the only time I hated the runflats was when I had a x5 35i loaner with the 20s for about 2 weeks. the amount of noise that I heard in the cabin was ridiculous and I finally understood why everyone was ditching the runflats. for some reason in the M I dont hear that road noise, that said I do like the convenience of being able to drive after getting a puncture.

Even with non run flats, if you patch them they lose their speed rating right....
Kind of like patching a track R-compound tire....would you trust an R-compound tire patched around a 130mph corner pushing upwards of 1G? I wouldn't.

Personally I like the run flats. I've ditched them on previous cars ('06 Mini Cooper, '06 Lexus GS) in favor of nicer riding tires. Not having a spare tire (3rd row) and the fact that I sell real estate, makes the run flats a must for me. If I get a flat while I'm out with a client, the last thing I want to do is change a tire or wait for roadside assistance. The run flats allow me to keep going.

I would argue that with 19s the ride is just fine even with RFTs. I have the adaptive drive but I don't think that does much for the actual ride quality. Still, I'm curious what the non-rfts would be like and since I have the spare and the crappy Dunlops....maybe I'll try

Any help with my '13 X6 35i would be greatly appreciated. I traded an '08 X5 4.8i recently for a new '13 X6. Bottom line is that the ride quality on the X6 is awful. I've already changed the OEM 19" run-flats to 18" snows (non-RF's) and that hasn't helped. No adaptive drive. The X5 had a real soft ride with non RF Dunlops.
Anything I can do with the suspension set-up on the X6? I'm willing to spend some bucks. btw, I appreciate a sports car type ride as I have a 996 turbo and a '01 M5. Both those ride better than my X6. I mistakenly assumed that the X6 & X5 sharedthe same platform, so the ride would be similar? No, I didn't test drive it - bought it via ebay (brand new) Thanks |

went to Conti DWS. Third week i owned i got a bolt stuck in the rear. 300 bucks down but was driveable until i got home...then bmw assist showed up.
bigger issue is finding the replacement tires in stock on short notice....big wiiide tires got a few laughs when i said i needed it in 24 hrs. BMW and tire centers had not DWS in stock in that size...literally called 14 tire stores and found 1 still good with my choice to move away from the 'stones Last edited by MonacoJoe; 01-07-2014 at 01:01 PM.. Thanks for this thread.
I'm owner of an X5d for almost two weeks now. I never had a tire as bad as the 18" Bridgestone Dueler RFT on any car I have ever driven in my live. I owned several new cars equipped with RFT's and never had such an loud, hard and rough running tire before. The road noise is killing me on the interstate or even highways. That said, I'm looking for 20" wheels. Is someone selling? |

Switched to Conti DWS last Spring. My experience is that the DWS beat the Bridgestone RTF in every way: traction, noise, wear, ride. IMHO, the RTF tires were just a way for car mfg. to increase trunk volume and gas mileage while still providing assurance that drivers would not be stranded. There are other ways like AAA or SlimeSmart.

Last week switched out the 19" Bridgestone Duehler RFT's on my wifes X5 with the Conti's DWS. Realized just how bad the Bridgestones really were/are. Transformed the X to a much more pleasant, civalized ride. Threw in a slime kit in the back for good measure. The DWS tire is a great fit, i ws totally impressed. AND, the cab is so quiet now!!!

I hate my 19 inch runflat stock rims/tires I am using for winter. Cant wait to get my summer 20's with smooth riding non runflat Toyo Proxes back on.

I am using Conti DWS. Great tire. Last couple weeks it was snowing like crazy here in Chicago and I drove through deep snow with these with no problems at all. Great tire for really good price.

Anyone running the Hankook Ventus AS RH07?
