Replacing vacuum pump DYI on N63
Has anyone out there tried to replace a vacuum pump on X6M? How complicated is it? Can it be DIY type of weekend project? Any links to a DIY or images?

Symptom is a burning oil/plastic type of smell from outside as well as inside when exhaust is hot. I know that the problem is with vacuum pump leaking since this is diagnostics I got from my local BMW dealership. They quoted me $2,500 for the repair (parts+labor). I can get a new genuine BMW vacuum pump p/n: 11668605976 (for $200 - new no box), and O-Ring for $3 p/n: 11668605976. Just want to see if anyone attempted to replace it themselves and have any input on this DIY. Apparently repair manual is allowing 8 hours for this job.

Vacuum Pump - DIY - short write up with pictures
I finally received new Vacuum Pump for my 2011 X6M p/n: 11668605976 ($200 new, genuine oem BMW - no box). Removed the old leaking one and installed new one. (local authorized BMW dealership offered to do this job for $2000 labor + $500 parts = $2500, when I asked why so expensive, was told 9.5 hours of labor). Took me 4.5 hours all together from start to end, total cost: $200 + my own time:
- Remove plastic engine cover - Remove filters from passenger's side - Remove plastic engine trim passenger's and driver's side - Disconnect and remove oxygen sensors - passenger's side - Remove heat shield from top of the catalytic converters - Remove heat shield next to the vacuum pump (passenger's side) - Disconnect Vacuum Pump - Loosen three bolts holding old vacuum pump (E8 Torx External) - Remove old vacuum pump - Rotate new vacuum pump to match same position as the old one - Install new vacuum pump and torque three E8 bolts - Re-assemble all components in reverse order - Done (4.5 hours) |

BTW Igor.. just saw this thread... there's a campaign to fix this? sorry
This is a 2-part campaign by BMW for cars with the N63 engine. It was announced on 12/29/2014 and called "N63 Customer Care Package", bulletin B001314. The highlights are: - check the timing chain for stretch; replace if necessary - check the following items and replace if necessary: fuel injectors, mass air flow sensors, crankcase vent lines, battery, engine vacuum pump, low pressure fuel sensor - change the oil service interval to 12 months/10,000 miles Even if your car is out of warranty (ie, 5 years old and has 200k miles), it is covered by this campaign and costs the owner nothing. The dealers are instructed to call all N63 owners in their area and schedule the cars to come in for this service, pending the dealership's availability. The dealership is instructed to provide a loaner car of equal or higher class to the customer (per N63 Customer Care Package Outbound Service Script document). BMW is also offering extra incentives for owners affected by this campaign to trade in their N63 vehicle and purchase a new car (called the N63 Customer Loyalty Offer, details in a separate sales bulletin). Also associated with this campaign is the "N63 Customer Appreciation Program". The dealerships are authorized to provide the customer with a gift of $50 value. This could be a gas card, gift bag containing BMW Lifestyle products, vehicle detailing, etc. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...80#post8818280

Alex, $1500 indy is better than $2500 stealership. Not sure how daring you are, but I took time and replaced it myself. The whole thing ended up costing me $200 for new pump plus my 4.5 hours (which I actually enjoyed spending on my car

I think that on 50i vacuum pump is located in front of the engine, on X5M and X6M, S63 engine, it is located in the back of the engine. With front of the engine location, access to the pump is much better than back of engine location. On mine X6M it is located in the back. As I mentioned earlier, took me a total of 4.5 hours to replace.

My BMW rep. answered my question for me: "Your X6M is not applied to this recall." Apparently BMW uses higher quality parts, components and assembly techniques for their "///M" models vs the non-"///M" models.

Great DIY. I'm away from home right now or I'd be doing this on my X5///M as well. Instead, its getting done on my dime at the dealership.
Glad the work isn't too bad for a weekend mechanic.

My buddy works at the dealership, so he did plenty of things for me since he already had my car apart...vacuum pump was leaking and replaced for around $240 including parts, I bought my own low pressure fuel sensor line off eBay for $50 (it's the bottom line where the sensor is different, it's shown as "superceded" when searching www.realoem.com, crankcase vent lines were replaced (also "superceded" by my parts 1, 2, and 3 we're already broken, I've still gotta replace three others) myself when I removed and gutted my cats, then AFAIK my MAF's are still OK but now I question them since they're part of the N63 recall. Ironic thing is a month prior I was writing BMW NA about my leaking injectors and I was told basically to F off for and they knew nothing of any pending recall, then suddenly a thread was created here with a bulletin number and I was at the dealership shortly after. Screw you, BMW

Yes, the E7_ X_M is an S63, the second gen X_M's have the S63TU which are much closer the the F10 M5 powerplant than we are, hence why things like JB4 and BCM don't work on the E series vehicles, only the F series.

Spoke to my SA at Peter Pan BMW. Apparently only non-M X6's and X5's are covered under the recall. X5M's and X6M's are not covered. I was also confirmed one more time that replacement parts that are covered under this recall are different between M and non M models, or S63 and N63 engines.

What type of bolt is the lower one that connects the rear heat shields (9 & 10 in diagram) together? I'm trying to understand why I can't just remove the passenger rear heat shield alone to access the vacuum pump screws? That seems to be the only bolt preventing that.
I can get an array of extensions and universal joints up there, but being by myself couldn't get a good connection and wasn't certain I had the correct (torx?) bit. http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E7...r_heat_shield/ Last edited by RustyX5M; 08-17-2016 at 01:59 PM.. |
