X5M from E90M
Any X5M owners that can give me a little info on the X5M?
I currently have an E90M. Love it, but since it is a manual, I may need to get rid of it. Wife will need to be able to drive my car by the summer and refuses to learn how to drive stick. Love the M so thinking of trading for one with a DCT or and X5M. How much will I miss the e90M? I DO NOT track and just enjoy a little spirited drive when I head up north. What I enjoy most about the M3 is how it just changes when I hit pass 3.5K RPM. Love the engine sound. Will the X5 give me something similar? |

I traded in an 11 E92 on the X5M.The feel of the M3 V8 roaring up to 8K was nice. The X5M is impressive how it launches and handles. Once you spool the turbo's up, it becomes an animal.
I had a MDCT so not sure how to compare to a manual in the M3. The trans in the X5M does not shift anywhere near like the M3. It does okay but a DCT trans would have been awesome in the X5M. It is always fun catching the look on someones face when you tap the gas and leave them behind. Find an X5M and take it for a spin, I think you will be impressed with it and not miss the M3 too much other than the MPG.

The X5M will be faster in straight line, will be easier to mod (tune, etc), but the perception of speed is not there so even if you are going fast, it feels like standstill. Which means, less fun. Exhaust sound will be a let down compared to E9x M3. It will be more comfy (or softer if you will) but IMO, the X5M doesn't need to be stiff like the M3.
IMO, if you love the fun factor of the M3, keep it and just get another car for the wife. Don't get me wrong, I love the X5M for what it is and once tuned, it really wakes it up. I think the strong point of the X5M is that, you don't get provoked by a lot of people to race them - unlike when driving the M3, everyone wants to race you. The other + point for the X5M is, not many people know the capability of it and the look of their faces are just priceless after spanking them. The downside of X5M: since you are sitting way up, it doesn't feel fast until you look at the speedo. The exhaust sounds like a 4 cylinder and if you combine those two, the fun factor drops dramatically. |

Great to read all of these comparisons. I'm actually on the hunt for an E90M to join the X5///M, I think that's the perfect garage.

I made this move (2008 6MT E90M3 to 2011 X5M) in October.

It's true that you're sitting up so much higher that it feels off (at least to me). I've tried to take corners somewhat aggressively (keeping in mind I'm on Blizzaks) and the traction control is constantly interfering. Double-sided coin: I can't break the thing loose when I want to play! but I don't feel like I'm the one in control. Also, the suspension is MUCH softer than what's on the E9xM3, even with EDC on. I hear the exhaust noise can be "fixed" via high flow (or catless) downpipes, but haven't investigated more than a quick search here. I had Gintani Race on my E90... a comparison just isn't possible between the two engine noises. S65 wins in my book. Except the tuning capabilities at altitude for the S63 with the turbos are intriguing... I'd agree that maybe you find another vehicle for your wife... or try DCT? I'm already back to looking at the FS section on M3Post. But to ADD to my stable instead of replace. Because this thing is a BEAST in the snow and I also like having a "truck". Albeit one that gets absolutely AWFUL gas mileage. WAY worse than the E90!

They are just two very different cars. If you are not tracking the M3 than the X5M may appeal to you. I had a M5 before and still miss the V10 howl.
That being said I love my X5M, because it is very useful to carry stuff and still is an amazing performer. This is fun too:

I switched from a 09 E90M3 to a '13 X5M about 9 months ago. I needed something that could tow my track car, and something with a little more space to put 3 kids in the back seat. I was pleasantly surprised by the X5. For what it is, and what I use it for, I don't think there is a better vehicle on the market, except for maybe a Cayenne Turbo S. It's fun to hustle around defying the laws of physics of a 5300lb vehicle. It corners flatter that the E90 with EDC. Lap times (I was crazy enough to try a couple session at TWS) are amazing for an SUV. The things that get old quickly are the high driving position, the weight, turbo lag, and how quiet it is. With a tune, it can get to 100mph in ~8sec, but you don't feel it - there is too much isolation, and turbos don't snap your head back, they come on softly and gently increase pressure on your posterior. It's not an M3....but pretty damn good for an SUV.

Hope you don't mind the thread jack but I'm in the same boat. Current '11 E90 M3 owner looking at the greener X5M grass. I have a beater F-150 that sees all my winter and severe weather duty. Having two vehicles (and a sport bike) is ridiculous admittedly and I'd like to enjoy the luxury of the M year round. No track days in my future. I'm sure I'll miss the 6MT and the V8 sound. I like the tune-ability of the X5M and the overall utility. I test drove a '10 X5M and was surprised by the grunt.
Still undecided after reading this thread sadly...

Best of both worlds...
As seen in my sig, I have a 07 E92 335i with all the mods... Evolve tune, intercooler, BMW performance kit, Injen intake, catless downpipes, ... and it is crazy fast and fun to drive...
as I am growing older and it became time to "upgrade" to something more "practical and civilized", I stumbled upon the X5M... all I can say is "wow". Unbelievable! But you all know well how hard it is to part with something that has given you so many years of fun and good memories, so I gave my 335 to my son (keeping it in the family!) and this way I can have the best of both worlds! Just my 2 cents...

Married, kids, dog, yes. Wife drives stick too
Someone needs to grow up themselves. The wife was actually ok with me picking up an 89 RX7 turbo and dropping in a V8 into it as a project car. Decided I think I going to find a Saab 97x aero instead. She's awesome |
