Angry X5 Tire worn out so fast!

Hello there, first time post on X5 forum. Got some questions regarding tires....

So I just went to the dealer for my 2012 X5d's 10,000-miles service. (Her current mileage is about 10300 miles ish).
My dealer inspected the tires and told me that all tires are pretty worn out and should be replaced. They have showed me the tires and one of them already went down to the secondary wear mark (or whatever it called).

I know most of the time dealer will just exaggerate stuff to make you replace them. But this still surprise me as I have my 535i @ 30k miles and the same dealer never mentioned any tire issue to me.

So, my question is, do you X5 owner find your tires wear out so fast? At what mileage do you guys have to replace your tires.

My dealer quote me the tires for about $500 each, just normal dealer pricing. I am definitely going to shop outside, do you guys have any good suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Seems excessive at just over 10K. What tires are they you never said? The summer performance will wear faster than the all-season. I got about 20K out of my Dunlops. Your alignment or toe settings may be off as well which will eat tires. You will see more wear on the inside of the tire is this where you see the problem? I dumped the runflats for non-runflats and couldn't be happier. Do a search on the forum lot's have members have done the same.

Toe eats tires. I would have the dealer check alignment. It's possible they may be able to not just rotate the tires, but also swap the tires on the wheels so that the inside edge is now on the outside edge.

+1 on the alignment, and throw them in the front if possible

Why bother with dealer? This is not a BMW-specific issue in any way. A simple alignment issue.
Go get alingment done at Les Schwab for about 80$, then get your tires at Discount Tire for a fraction of what dealer would charge.

I don't think 10k out of OEM run flats is that ridiculous, it really just depends on how the car is driven and on what kind of roads.

Concrete roads will eat tires much faster than asphalt.

In South Denver virtually every single road is concrete, and doing 75% city driving I got about 8k out of my last set of summers.

All-seasons will last a bit longer, but don't expect to get 50k out of tires on a heavy vehicle like this.

Hello Guys, thanks for the reply!

Yes, they are suspecting alignment issue, as we clearly see non-even worn out on the tires. It just surprise me that the tires can go this fast...

Nevertheless, I guess it is just the fact of these OEM tires. I will go do an alignment and have people there check it out again. If they are goner I will just replace them.

Don't get it aligned at a BMW dealer, get it done at a alignment shop. Do a search on this on the forums and look for posts on this from a member with the name ARD. May be on some of the other BMW forums as well. BMW has a real wide range and depending where you are in that range you can have a set last as they should or have the life reduced to what you are seeing.

There are a number of performance tires that would only last 10k or so miles. They are often considered "Ultra-high performance," summer tires, not quite race rubber, but pretty darn close.

There is no reason short of a Lamborghini, that an OEM BMW tires would only last 10k miles, there is something else a miss.

I keep run flats on for my wife's "peace of mind". That said, my (gone now) 2011 X5 50i would only get about 12,000-15,000 miles per set of Bridgestone tires. Couldn't rotate them because they are staggered, so I just bit the bullet and got new tires. The Bridgestone had a wear rating of 300. My new X5 50i has Pirelli RFT tires with a wear rating of 220. Never had Pirelli before so I'll just have to wait and see. Again my thought on this is a car as heavy as this with four wheel drive will probably go through tires, couple that with alignment or balance issues and there you have it.

I have a Cruze as a runaround car and it still have the original tires in good shape even though the car has been thrashed around a bit.

RTFs wear out very quickly, especially on concrete. Get some Conti DWS. Smoother, quieter, last much longer. Snow traction just short of a dedicated snow tire.

I posted this on another forum.. but will make this short..I agree with others.. alignment. my 3 series with 10k miles was almost unbearable to drive road droan so loud I hated it. (I thought the sound was a normal run flat thing-- until I got a 2nd car X5 and it's smooth as silk) in for the normal service tech said the front tires are stop sign round.. only the inside. I'm very particular and don't drive often.. its a 2010 bought new and only has 12k on it today. I live in the country with one stop light and no curbs to mash.. long story short it needed an alignment- dealership gave me a FREE set of new conti tires.. and I'm not the bitchy type customer I was fully going to buy a set as Ive had tires last only 10k in prior cars. when I bought the X5 I said right off the line, let me have it aligned.. they said it's brand new.. I said do it anyway-- its my 129 bucks. sure enough guy said it was way off.. food for thought.. get any new car aligned.
