Unhappy X5 Engine overheat shut down on Freeway!

My 2007 3.0si had an engine overheat warning and then went into safe mode on the freeway. I started the car and heard a loud strange fan noise and thought something was not right. But no error or warning so I drove it on the freeway for 10mins and then a yellow engine temp warning binged telling to slow down and stop the car to let the engine cool down. I lost all power on the freeway and was going 40mph trying to move over to the right to find the first exit. Long story short its at the dealer and wont know anything until Monday.

Just wondering if any X5 owners had this issue and if you can share your fix or diagnoses.

Power steering was working, I am thinking it has to do with a failed waterpump/thermostat area...???

it's the dreaded electric waterpump failure. They'll replace it and you're good to go. But dealership will charge you upwards $1k. If you DIYed it will only cost you around $360-$450 depending if you have 4zone climate control or not. Removing the pump is a bit tricky though since there is not much space. The noise you heard was the fan going crazy (full power).

Thanks for the info Thirdy,

I'll continue to search for "electric waterpump failure" as that sounds like the probable cause.

Got a call from the SA today and its confirmed, a failed electric water pump, sigh. Warranty covers it but it was a real pain to have it fail on me the way it did, family outing had to be cancelled and had the kids sitting at the dealership for a bit.

Same thing happened to me this past weekend. 2009 3.0 44k, I got the loud fan noise and then got a series of warnings on the Idrive. I drove it slowly, wouldn't go past 30mph (limp mode) and right as I'm pulling into the dealer it says "warning engine temp high pull over turn off vehicle". Warranty expired end of January, eleven days ago. Holeman BMW of Mt laurel Nj approved the goodwill repair. Should be ready tomorrow, $0 out of pocket. My SA Chris is the best SA I've ever had. Very knowledgable and got me approved for the goodwill repair !

I have a 2007 x5 yesterday i started to notice the fan will turn on full speed after putting it into gear. I haven't gotten any warning lights on the dash and the car runs great just the fan is really annoying. Ive tried to put a newspaper in the fan to see if the fan was going bad as suggested on forums and it looks to be strong. Could this be the water pump also or a sensor ? I plan to take it to the shop just wanted to get an idea of what it could be since water pump replacement seems to be spendy.

I am new to BMW any suggestions are appreciated thanks.

Same thing happened to me when I had a 2007. Was water pump and fan blade was broken too. Had to exit a major freeway with NYC traffic from left lane with no power --- that was frightening and extremely dangerous! I don't like that so-called "safety feature" at all.

I just had the same problem with my 08 X5 3.0si, 53k. Right after a normal refill and off the gas station, I heard the strong fan noise coming from the front, then the yellow warning light popped-up, "Engine overheating, drive moderately....". After another 5 minutes, the sign turned to red and instructed me to stop the car. I had to call the towing service to get the car towed to the BMW Service center. That was yesterday. I just picked up the car from BMW. The bill? $1,300! This includes $563 for a coolant pump, $145 for thermostat, and about $600 labor. Only two weeks ago I just spent $4,000+ on a set of new tires and the first major service after the warranty expired in 2012. This is crazy!
Anyway, my question is why they replaced both the pump and the thermostat. I thought it should be a "either or" fix.

My 2009 X5 66k miles the yellow warning light then quickly turned red today. It said it was overheated. Guess it is the water pump. I will take it tomorrow to find out.
