Did not choose the optional roof rails because they spoil the looks, but we will need to be able to mount a roof box at least once a year... So hopefully there is a way or will be one in time, otherwise the oem roof rails will have to be retrofitted Haven't got the car yet, finalised the order last week, delivery = week 14. |

I think you do need the roof rails to be able to mount the roof box on the X6.
If you do need the roof rails, I'd suggest you add them to your original order (or at least try to add them to it). It is a lot cheaper to buy them part of the original order rather than having them retrofitted, since the dealership will charge you labor on top of the cost of the rails. Not to mention that they will have to remove the roof liner to be able to mount the roof rails!

Roof rails or rear mounted bike carrier?
Quote:
I didn't think of the roof rails when i ordered mine. But wish i'd thought of it. Can be handy to have in case spur of the moment if an item is just 1" too tall for the hatch. Accessories fotos w/ roof rails does not look bad at all. There is a rear mounted bike carrier that u may be able to use w/ a roof box, but access to hatch/"trunk" would be problematic unless you 1st take the box off. |

yeah, you could fit a roof box without roof rails by getting a vacuum type attachment. I used a similar system for my old Pajero which has a fiberglass hardtop and no metal rails on the sides. 4 suction cups the size of a dessert plate with mounts. tough stuff, they never detached or budge even at high speeds.

U have to b sure the roof structure where u place your attachments by other manufacturers can handle the stress. e.g.The hood is aluminium. what's the roof made of? If the outer skin buckles/warps & u'll have leaks around the sun/moon roof.

I had absolutely no problem with suction cups on fiber glass (which is softer than aluminium). And the Pajero shakes and rattles and jerks like hell when going over bumps and potholes. Never underestimate the tremendous power of vacuum. |
