Rotor and brake pad suggestions

I'll be changing my rotors and pads soon and looking for suggestions of what some of the members like and dislike.

With my current reaserch I have found it may be best to stick with full face rotors as I've read some threads of drilled and or slotted seem to be a waste. I for sure want the reduced brake dust so it seems like ceramic will be the way to go.

I have a 13' X5 msport 35i

Only slotted would make the most sense in a wet weather scenario. But at the same time, it also increases brake dust, since the slots keep the brake pad face clean. drilled are useless these days on todays modern pads and mainly street vehicles.

Pick up some Centric replacement rotors from amazon or your favorite retailer, and yes ceramic pads are a good choice.
You also will want to replace both the front and rear brake wear sensors (One for each end)

Unless you have an X5M? then I think your rotor choices are severely limited.

Yeah the X5M has huge front rotors that centric doesn't make. I need to replace mine soon and will grab the F85 rotors from BMWofAtlanta online. They seem to have the best prices.

If you're non-M then I'd say check out rockauto.com for centric rotors and pads. I put powerstop drilled/slotted rotors and cf/ceramic pads on the wife's E70 3.0si. The rotors look fancy but it always scares me how the cold braking of ceramic pads feel. They don't bite until they are warm...so drive slow for a while in the morning or you'll have a heart attack when you press the brake pedal. If you want a consistent pedal then go for a mixed pad. Check out Hawk.

I believe EBC makes front and rear brake rotors for the X5m now. Way cheaper than the factory rotors. Not sure about the quality.

I'm not sure about the EBC rotors for X5M. They are advertised in catalogs everywhere but I have never seen them shipping or in stock. I've ordered them before and canceled later on because they kept pushing back the shipping ETA. I gave up on them...

I ended up getting OEM F85 rotors all around and PowerStop pads. Pad selection is limited. Easy to find aftermarket rears since they're shared with other models, but fronts are difficult to source.

http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/b...+pad+kit,13824

POWER STOP ESK6065 EuroStop Premium Brake Kit is not drilled or slotted, I'm not sure about the pads though.
http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....1504546&jsn=15

POWER STOP K6065 Z23 Evolution Sport is drilled and slotted with CF/Ceramic Pads
http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....1504546&jsn=16

Both sets come with sensors, shims, grease. You can buy these and save some money over stock and get some stainless steel brake lines. UUC and ECS make the full 6 line kits. Stoptech sells only the primary 4 line kits. Regardless of whether you replace the lines make sure you properly bleed the brakes and follow bed-in instructions for the pads to make sure you don't get uneven deposits (commonly called "warped rotors").

Edit: There are other options if you click on just "rotor" or "brake pad." They sell centric also, which are awesome. I've had the Powerstop Z23 kit on my wife's E70 since early last year and they are solid. They do have to get warm to bite, but no rust on any of the components and they brake well after warm.

Brembo Zinc plated rotors and Textar ePad. OEM quality and performance without the excessive dust. There's no reason to buy slotted or drilled for the street and if anything will just add additional noise.

Aftermarket options will typically mean significantly less initial bite so just be mindful of that. Some people like the initial bite of the OEM pads while others don't so it's a personal preference.

I did a full review on the Textar ePad which with a search can be found on this forum. Also, if you plan to paint the calipers, I'd suggest taking the calipers off and properly preparing them for the best result. I added photos in my build thread during this processs and can be viewed by searching "Zeus"

How are the powerstop pads? Bite and dust?

good choice on StopTech, I heard good things about them

when I had my 2011 X5 35i, I upgraded mine with rotors from Brake Performance along with Akebono pads and had no complaints

nice cover. I wish I had taken that route. it would have been much easier.. I have to caliers completely taken off the car. and will start painting them tomorrow. one thing I'm missing is the dang E18 socket so I'm going to head to harbor freight tomorrow. I'm also considering ordering SS lines while the calipers are off.

thanks, covers were nice but they tend to move a little from time to time so I had to adjust them, if I wouldn't sell my car at the time I would probably take them off.
good call on painting the calipers, if its done right paint will last long time

Akebono's were great, I really never had any amount of dust since I put them on, wheels were always clean!
I wish they were making them for M models...

cool, thanks, that may be what I have to go with. Was there a lot of noise being ceramic?

I do not recall any noise coming from pads either.

sweet. Guess whenever I need a brake job I will switch.

As much time and money that I am spending on cleaning the wheels, I may change them earlier.
