Improving Offroad capabilities

The overlanding bug finally bit me, and I am looking into ways of improving my E70's off-road capabilities. While the most obvious choice is to get a 4runner, jeep or bronco etc, the best car is what you have. I am not looking for rock crawling capabilities, but something that can tackle a moderate difficulty trail while hauling an off-road camper.

E70 doesn't seem to have a good off-roading aftermarket support so hoping for the collective wisdom of the forum.

Initial questions:

1. What is the biggest size off-road tire can the wheel arch support? My research says 32", I could be wrong.
2. I would like to put steel rims, but have not found any that will fit 5x120 bolt pattern. Should I use some sort of adapters?
3. What is the most optimal way to raise it? spacers? If so, any recommendations?
4. The car has factory rear air suspension, does this impact off-roading capabilities?
5. Are there any transmission and oil pan protective shields for the e70?

Please share any off-road builds you are aware of.

Cheers!
