rebuild your M57 CCV breather

replaced the crankcase breather today which was apparently long overdue at 120k miles. The rubber was dry and hard, with a few cracks in it. It was extremely easy - the hardest part was making sure not to break the clips on the old cover just in case the new one didnt fit on for some reason.

I was planning on doing a provent oil catch can but have heard mixed things about catch cans with these diesels.

Hi, just to confirm, did this work?

I ask because the part numbers supplied by VEMO(VAICO) and ID parts both reflect a different valve cover part number. Not for the M57. I'm NOT saying its not correct, but asking to confirm it does.

It shows up for the N47 Diesels.

Yes it worked perfectly. That was my concern as well hence trying not to break my old ccv cap.

wcs531 were you having any symptoms which lead you to this or was this PM? Valve cover on or off when replacing?

No serious symptoms, I think that these fail around 100k miles like all the other rubber components around the engine. I was under the impression a bad CCV will let more oil into the intake, gumming up the valves and increasing oil consumption. I know oil will get into the intake regardless but i'd like to limit it as much as possible.

Only thing you need to remove to get to the CCV cap is the airbox. The only tools I used were a flathead screwdriver for the hose clamp on the mass airflow sensor and a small angled pick to gently pry on the clips holding the CCV cap on. A few towels to wipe out the gunk in there and you're good to go. Just take note on the CCV flap and spring orientation, sorry I didnt take pics while I was doing it
