Rear Axle Replacement

I have to replace the right rear axle, I have one on order and have been looking for a DIY,
I have changed 4 or 5 on E46's but they unbolted from the rear diff. These lock in with the clip like they do on the front diff's.
My big question is how much has to be disassembled at the wheel hub,
I was hoping to be able to get the 4 wheel hub bearing bolts out to slide it out the hub side to clear the rear diff and then back to the middle to get it out of the wheel hub.
Anyone?
