Viddy with "The Sound":

I watched and listened to the Viddy above, and heard exactly what I was dealing with. My problem was solved as soon as they replaced my Oil Pump. Absolutely no question about it. The work order was helpful; however, there is an easier way to replace the Oil Pump. My Tech did not have to drop the engine. The Bimmer Techs at the BMW Mothership are well aware of this problem. They just don't sing about it!
Hope this helps!
Is that video yours or someone else's? I am wondering if that is with windows down or up? Mine makes the exact same noise but is not as loud as it is in that video.

Not my viddy, but the sound was identical. Gets louder with wear. I have an honest dealer, and I learned that this is a well known issue. Well, assuming it's the same. The sound is unmistakable. Just like the sound in the viddy. However, the X5 oil pump is just a bit noisy even when functioning properly, so if yours isn't that loud, maybe it's considered within spec.

mine is not as bad as in the video. windows must be down to hear it. it's only audible when you give it gas.

isn't this the "golf cart" sound topic for v8 turbo x5/x5m? I have it. Told them to check oil pump they said i was crazy. Sounds like an electric motor whirring sound. Not the end of the world but makes truck sound a little ghetto

I've had the same golf cart noise at low speeds on my X5 50i since new. 45K miles later I still have the noise after wearing myself out trying to get BMW to even acknowledge that there is a problem. The response is "they all do that".
This low speed whine sounds pretty crappy for such a high end ultimate driving machine.

They're replacing the pump. Hallelujah. I guess this depends on which dealership you go to, since the idiots I bought it from refused to fix it while keeping it for over a month.

Another +1 for the oil pump fix.

It took a few days for the PUMA case to get approved, but now I've got a 50i that sounds like it should.

To OP, check my thread with the engine noise issue, I used to have the exact same noise on my X5M. The sound came from the turbo bearing and got replaced and etc.

Great news. Is there any documentation you could share with me that would help speed the process on my end? I have not yet attempted to get the dealer to fix mine, but I know I am in for a shit fight.

The best suggestion I would have is to give them clear instructions on how to reproduce the issue, or do a ride along with a tech. For me the issue was 100% reproducible when the engine was warn and was running at 2000 rpms.

The easier you make it for them to see the issue, the more willing they will be to fix it for you.

Alright thanks - that won't be hard, it makes the noise pretty much all the time.
