Question about BMW service

I bought a 2008 BMW X5 and when I bought it the seller told me the sunroof was broken. The sunroof and sun shade were closed. I took it to BMW El Paso to have it diagnosed and they told me that the cassette had to be replaced and the cost was $3400. When the gave me the truck back the sun shade was halfway open. I took it back and they said they can't close the shade and if I want it closed I got to pay them $800. My question is Why should I have to pay them to fix something they did? Do I have any recourse to get this fixed? Not interested in paying $3400 to fix a sunroof that I probably never use or $800 for something they did.

Did the service advisor see the shade closed when you brought it in?

If so, demand they return the car in the same condition you gave it to them.

She saw it when it was closed. She is stating that the shade is stuck and if they try to close it will break, so they have to take the roof lining down to attempt to close it and that's why they want me to pay $800 to do. I already send an email to BMW North America and slammed them on their survey. Now lets see what happens from here...

did you talk to the service manager? keep going until you get to the general manager.

they are losing money on your vehicle in the long run.

Yeah. "First, do no harm" doesn't only apply to doctors.

Not sure but I think in the manual their is instructions to close it manually.

As far as stuck goes their may be something in the track keeping it from closing all the way. I'd see what you can do of they don't take care of you. But that's just bullshit and way to much money.

Thank you guys, I spoke with BMW NA and they took down my issues and told me that the Service Manager for El Paso BMW would give me a call. That was December 29... Still waiting for that call. I'm planning on going down there and asking to speak with the Service Manager today.

Had the SA managed your expectations in advance by explicitly stating that to diagnose the problem, the sun shade may not end up in the same position, that's one thing. However, since they made it worse, that's on them.

Just wanted to give you an update. No attorney wanted to take the case and BMW USA was a waste of time. So I took it to a local BMW mechanic and he found out that the problem was the rear motor. He replaced it and now the sunroof works like new. All for 350! unless you have warranty, its a waste to take it to the dealer. I can't believe the "experts" wanted to replace the whole sunroof for $3700. BMW of El Paso is never getting my business again!

Unfortunately I agree with you here.

I am a BMW guy through and through and wish I could bring my X5M and my Alpina to the local dealership for servicing - anything from oil changes to bigger jobs. However, over time, my faith in them has disappeared to the point where I will only bring my vehicles there if absolutely necessary.

It's a shame because I would sooner sell my vehicles with records from BMW dealership, but a performance shop will have to do!

If anything, buying a BMW with BMW dealership service records (for out of warranty service) would make me question the previous owner's sanity.
