Front suspension THUMP

Hello fellas,

Past few weeks I noticed that when going slow and press the break I hear a thump. When I go over a small bump at normal speeds I hear like something is loose. Not really sure what it can be. Any direction is appreciated.

My thoughts are maybe control arms? Endlinks?

It's not bouncy, just noisy like something is loose or has to much play.

Thanks!

When i bought my used x5 50i, there was a thump every time I brakes, say when rolling to a stop sign. Turned out to be leaking thrust rod bushings which were replaced under warranty. Pretty common problem.

Thanks, I did some research and its one of those "COMMON" issues with x5 E70. I found a DIY http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=798330 not sure if I will tackle this on my own or get an indy to take care of it.

Here is a link if anyone else needs to buy these:

https://www.oembimmerparts.com/BMW-X...73949-50hd.htm

Parts - $216
Indy - $175

Just received the new lower control arms with bushings. I went with Meyle HD, had them on a previous e90, quality is great.

Will post pics later.

Last time I had something similar it was a broken sway bar bracket on an E53.

I was going to tackle this on my own and then I found an indy by my house for $120. On the way there now to drop off the car and tomorrow will get it aligned.

An update!

Got the lower controls arms installed and the thump went away. Suspension feels a slight tighter, nothing drastic.

Took it in this morning for an alignment and didn't need one. The indy mechanic and the guy at the alignment both said that control arms do not effect the alignment.

Happy New Years everyone!

Nope. Meyle is just label/packaging - the stuff itself could be made anywhere (mostly China, obviously). Note it doesn't say "Made in..."

Doesn't automatically makes it bad. But be informed.

Hello Fellas!

So the thump continued on after the control arms were installed and of course it was driving me crazy...

Took it to an indy mechanic that specializes in BMW and right away he knew exactly what it was.
The spring strut assembly has 2 little donuts "Guide support upper and lower" that just disintegrate with time and when you go over a bump its a knocking metal sound. It drove me CRAZY for weeks.

I looked up the parts and now I am doing a refresher on the front suspension below are part numbers and cost. Had to do both sides:

2 - #10 - 31336776390 Guide Support Upper
2 - #8 - 31336776389 Guide Support Lower
2 - #9 - 31336788776 Guide Support Flange
2 - #7 - 31336771892 Additional Shock Absorber

Will have to bring down the whole strut assembly so I went ahead and just changed the sway bar end links too.

1 - Lemforder Sway Bar End link left 31356859651
1 - Lemforder Sway Bar End link right 31356859652

Will pick it up Saturday afternoon and see how it goes. Bought all parts from FCP Euro shipped in 4 days and best prices out there.

Hope this helps anyone going through the same issue.

Hello Fellas!

Just picked up the X from the mechanic and it's night and day... the suspension feels new and tight. It just might be that I was used the metal thump.

The indy charged $120 per side.

Good to hear! My quick fix worked for about 45 miles and then I ended up having to overnight a new mount. The wife and I spent 2 hours installing 1 new mount and there was some frustration with pulling out the strut and compressing the spring...turned out okay though.

Thats just what I call poor engineering and design from BMW. One of the many!

Mine were done at 72k, the next time will be done by the future owner.
