You guys ask for it, Now you'll get it soon. Digital Dash DIY

Since all the data has been lost and I decided to do something that's trendy and also use some of my code form my center screen project...
This is a piece that replace the whole climate control panel and useless cd player (I use a proper sony deck which located inside my glove box and connect to my audison processor under passenger seat, cd is useless.....since with this thing I drive will be useless, well just remove the 1-6 quick access button.)
This thing will work great with a AVIN unit since AVIN unit is a great infortament system and this will handle all the vehicle réglage and information (buit in multiple trip computer, a built in dash cam, tracker, later even a remote start, all other telemetrics features, also a frontal collision warning and a not so well working lane departure warning). Since for me all those stupid driver assistance feature is useless....
Here is a climate control page work in progress..

all those text button are just place holder, for my proof of concept I will do tomorrow when I am able to finish the background coding to make it communicate with canbus. Unfortunately for a very long period of time there won't be a english version available..... My lazy ass choose not to include language files at begining so everything will be in french for now.

Recently I post some updates for my head unit and get a lot of hate, claim it is too audi and not so bmw, need "factory look". Fine Fine Fine, I guess I will keep that project as a private and focus on this very simple easy one which will work with your $2000 fancy AVIN head unit. How about that??
This dash is work in process, I just spend about 2 hours on graphics only to satisfy all factory looks fan.
This is more advanced than bmw's own dash. All object are model in 3d and rendered real time. Oh the map? It is google map API, this whole thing will be running on Linux.
Some simple Q & A
How we gonna control this damn dash?
- Of course i Drive controller!
How to enter the address in your map?
- If you have a avin unit then you are able to connect your google maps/waze map with the dash using Google map API, if you don't have one you can use your phone.
Can I change the theme of the dash?
- Of course!

This would look so cool. I'm just trying to picture how I would make it fill out the instrument cluster that is already there. Would it just be placed in front?

This is a 12.3 inch display. there are plenty of cheap used gauge cluster on ebay for e70, around 3$300-500, the only thing we need is a casing. with some laser cutting and plastic trimming you will have a larger fisplay cover the whole cluster. unless you want to cut oprn your original cluster(which i wont) you will need a new replacemment cluster. Total cost is around 500-700 so still cheaper than a 6wb swap which doesnt work for x5s. with a AVIN unit you are able to get full screen navigation too.

Exactly. Do it.

On a side note:

How easy/difficult is it for you to make an apk using the same layout of speedometer you posted, containing:

1. Analog Speedometer functioning by Tablet On-Board GPS
2. Google Maps in the 2nd Circle (GPS + Internet)
3. Analog Clock
4. Mini Gauges, left for Compass and right for Tablet Battery.

Currently on my Ford Fusion, i am already placing a tablet in front of Gauge cluster, but your design would look sick.

Possible?

The unit you posted looks too Audi and out of place. I would not want that in my X5.

I might pick up a used gauge cluster and see what size LCD I can fit in it.

RichardR0404 - you said you were using a PI for the hardware, right?

I already measure the size and decided its 12.8 inch. also in this case PI might nkt be able to work. we need it to run on some sort of embedded system, for the booting speed and stability. Also im still going with qt because we are good at that stuff.lol qt support 3d so we can have some fun with it.

Do you have a link to the 12.8" you think will fit?

Now that I've seen more posts, I'm practically drooling. I need this in my E70. LOL

I have an Avin unit, so this would take our cars straight to 2018-- easily.

I saw that pricing on the tablets was based on qty's. Perhaps we can get a group buy going to get tablets once the software is all ready!
