2003 X5 iPhone AUX Cable?
I hope you all don't mind if I post here regarding an older X5. If so just delete the post.
I just bought a 2003 X5 for my daughter who would like to be able to connect her iPhone to the factory stereo. Is there an accessory jack on the back of this head unit (nav with cassette)? Chris |

I installed the Aux input and addiotnally installed the BMW iPod interface on my MKIV nav system and am happy with the OEM iPod interface. You can find them very reasonable on eBay and would recommend a 3rd gen model. You just loose the CD changer if you choose this option since it essentially emulates the CD changer and you can actually just install the interface in the rear of the car by connecting it to the CD changer plug instead of following the ridiculously tedious BMW method.

I've been plunking around on eBay and think I've found an OEM kit for about $250. Question: Is there an OEM kit for the Lightning connector? I would guess not given their relative ages...
In that case, would you lean toward the aftermarket, or an OEM with 30-pin to Lightning adapter? Chris |

I am a fan of everything OEM if possible. The gen 3 OEM ipod interface that I got was p/n 65 11 0 035 962. You can use either the kit for use with or without navigation as the only difference is the length of one of the cables and if you do the simple install by placing at the rear and connecting to the CD changer cable then it makes no difference. Like I said previously, the OEM install method is very archaic and would not recommend and would install at the rear and if you wanted to extend to the console, just purchase a $15 extension cable for the ipod connector side. If you go this direction I would be more than happy give you guidance on the install.

I don't seem to be able to find an installation guide for the 962, but the install guide for the 961 says "Not compatible with optional Navigation (SA609)...", and this car has SA609. Darn.

The hardware is exactly the same for the nav and non-nav models with the exception of the car to interface wiring harness having a long cable for the L & R audio cable connection. You can just tie into the cd changer harness at the rear by connecting the 5 corresponding wires of the interface: Power+, GND-, ibus, L audio, R audio and Audio GND-. It works perfectly and is extremely easy. I do have some factory install instructions but if going this route they are useless.

The interface I got was HW:3.0, SW:3.1. This is the 3rd and final generation and it supports the title/artist text and also works with charging of my iPhone 5S. I am not sure if ten 2 does this but I would definitely keep my eyes out for a 3rd gen. There are a couple on eBay for very cheap but the are just the interface without the 2 cables so unless you would have a reassure for the cables, I would not get those. Hope this helps.
