Trailer Coupling Preparation

So I'm buying a 2012 X5 and a build code says it has Trailer Coupling Preparation.

What do I need to buy to actually tow a trailer? Do I still need the ball joint and another kit?

Thanks

What do you mean by build code? Are you referring to a VIN decoder that is showing this?

I think it just means the factory installed the wiring pigtail. My 2013 says the same thing for its build. Think its standard but not sure. The receiver still needs to be purchased and I wonder what modifications need to be done to the lower portion of the bumper cover.

That's what I was thinking…I just ran my VIN and I see 8SL Preparation For Trailer Tow Hitch.

As krc328ic stated above, it's just got the initial wiring installed from the factory to be able to install a hitch. You'd still need to purchase a trailer hitch, and further wiring if you're going to tow, vs. just a bike rack setup (no wiring needed). Bumper requires removal for installation of any E70 hitch, OEM or aftermarket.

I don't think the picture here is accurate as the OEM setup requires a portion of the rear bumper to be cut, and this picture doesn't show it, though it does include part #'s -

I'm typically a big proponent of OEM but I'll be doing an aftermarket hitch (execuhitch) this time…no way I'm having a section of my rear bumper cut away for a trailer hitch.

Lots of info and pics here of the various hitch options -

Worth noting…there are other options less expensive than the Execuhitch that are not OEM…the Curt hitch for example, but you'll still see the receiver (example pics in that last link I posted). Still not an acceptable look on an X5 for my tastes but definitely an option.

It's not that big of deal. There is a trim piece around it and it tucks the receiver behind the bumper so you see it less. I had it on both x5s. You won't notice after 5 minutes.

Probably just depends on the owner - looks are subjective after all. Lots of people have the OEM setup and aren't bothered by it, so I won't disagree with your post. With that said, I would be bothered by it for certain and no way would I cut a section of the rear bumper off. That's just me though.

Here's a white M Sport like mine…yikes!

Your right I guess it depends on the model. Didn't think about that sport rear bumper. Guess you either buy it to be a workhorse or sporty not both.

It can be both, just install an Execuhitch.
