Safety Problem with X6M

Hi All,
I am enjoying my 2013 X6M driving with my wife, entering a highway when I must have accidentally tapped the up paddle shifter. I notice a vehicle that is coming up fast as I am merging onto the highway and floor the gas pedal. No downshift, and we almost get creamed. Yes, if you accidentally tap the up shift in D or S, you are not able to downshift by using the accelerator or kick down. Very unsafe.
BMW USA will do nothing to fix this and say it is the normal operation of the vehicle.
Please note this and be careful.

Merging at less than 85 mph in NJ is unsafe.

Thats how the owners manual says it works. If it did it automatically after you did it manually, can you imagine the computer trying to figure out if you were going to shift it next or waiting for the computer to do so the next time it needed to shift?

My point is the kick down button should never be defeated. Especially if you are not aware of this. 3,5 and 7 series do not do this.
I am mostly driving in manual mode now, but it still is too slow to shift manually from 6th to 3rd.

Imagine situation when you need the fastest possible acceleration, like getting on the freeway
You are at around 45-50mph and just need to get to 70+ fast, because of upcoming traffic.
You do your kickdown while in MT mode (assuming it works the way you want it) and AT downshifts all way to 2nd gear.
So far so good?
Now your car rockets forward like a mad man, but in split second you hit rev limitter.
Now you have another problem - you have to remember to upshift quick enough or the 2nd gear will make sure the guy behind you will find a nice spot on your rear bumper

I would not wanna have kickdown in MT, leave this for D or S
Calling this topic "safety problem" is a bit missleading and exaggerating

P.S. On the track kickdown is actually dangerous, since it may produce unexpected results in shifting

well put, i say just be more careful/aware of what mode your car is in. this is an M car after all that is suppose to work on a track which is why it doesnt kick down like the normal series cars do in manual

It's not meant to drive itself...it's up to the driver to know how it works and use it properly. Sorry, that's not a safety problem. The fastest way out of the OP's scenario would be to pop it back into D and then it will kick down.
