X5 M Turbo broken?
Here is a video I took earlier today. It's on a 2011 X5 M with 57K miles.
It's me moving the camera/phone from one intake bank to the other, with the housing removed. The left/passenger bank is making the sound, which I can only describe as a wobble. There is no sound coming from the other intake bank, besides the background noise. Not sure if it's the turbo going out or maybe some sort of exhaust leak making the sound but I'm preparing for the worst. If it's the turbo, may replace both with Pure Turbos. Anyone hear anything like this before? Deal with this issue? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I have the same sound and had my BMW mechanic friend check it out, but couldn't find anything mechanically wrong. When I put my downpipes on I checked for turbo shaft play/oil and there was none. He replaced the vacuum hoses/breathers but still same sound

So strange...maybe the sound is being transferred from somewhere else altogether...

I've heard the same bellowy sound as well. While it might not be related because theirs no rattle, 3 series cars suffer from wastegate rattle due to the linkages getting loose, so they rattle and/or allow exhaust gases to escape since the wastegate isn't closing all the way. I've watched YouTube videos about how to adjust for preload on the wastegates, but I haven't actually attempted to do the work. Other than the needed tuning and wanting to swap on M5 headers, the pros are outweighing the cons and I'll be doing headers and Pure turbos soon enough.

I had very similar noise on my X5M, took it to dealer, it turns out loose bolt for vacuum pump, they replaced the bolt $4 + labor $350 b/c of where the loose bolt is... ever since noise is gone.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to attempt to DIY this one of these days and report back whether it has fixed the issue or not.

I have never identified the problem. Right now I'm at 64K miles and haven't had any issues with performance. Still pulls strong. If I ever get around to troubleshooting it beyond what I have already done, I would start with the bolts on the vacuum pump...as cbakking suggested.

I believe I have a blown turbo as well. Lots of smoke at idle coming from the exhaust after its fully warmed up. However the car pulls fine. Taking it to my mechanic this week to see if its the turbos or head gasket
Best case scenario its blown turbos. Upgrade to Pure turbos and get them repaired at the same time = Happy me. Worst case scenarion its a blown head gasket which will cost right around six grand |

Best way to tell if it's a blown hg is remove your radiator cap prior to starting your truck(cold start) start the truck and see if their are bubbles inside the radiator...if you see bubbles you're fucked(blown hg)

From what I know a blown turbo will give a howling sound with Rev'ing along with the rattle... spun bearing sounds like your issues hopefully not.
FYI- if you have CPo coverage or factory keep bring the truck back and leaving it, I was able to score 4grand from BMW corp. because they couldn't find a issue and the combination between days held and visits was between the lines of LemonLaw Goto leamonlaw.com and contact the lawyers. Your state guide lines should be listed there. Good look ?
