Reliability of 2011 X5 xdrive 35i

I am looking to buy a 2011 X5 xDrive 35i with 56k miles on it from a local dealer. The car seems fine and was very well maintained, it was a corporate car and CarFax shows regular maintenance. The car has new spark plugs, all filters have been replaced, has had brake fluid flush, has new tires and alignment, replaced lower control arms and oil filter housing seals, and the vanos bolts have already been replaced. The car drives great, feels like a new vehicle to me drives straight and shifts smoothly. I am concerned however with the reliability of 2011 BMW X5's however I have been told that I should expect to spend around $2k dollars a year in maintenance and repairs. That seems high to me and friends that have BMW's have told me they are actually not needing many repairs and maintenance has been reasonable even as compared to other vehicles they have owned such as Acura, Audi and Lexus. I put around 9k miles per year on my cars and I am easy on vehicles. I just wanted to find out what other owner's have experienced with their E70 X5's.

Thanks

There was a recent post on here about '11 3.5i reliability. Do a search to find more info. Mine's been rock solid reliable with 53k miles.

You should probably figure on $2K a year, average - some years more/less than others. You're looking at a vehicle that was probably north of 60K new depending on packaging and options, and your maintenance costs will be based on that, not what it's current value is.

Each BMW model is different...what models do your friends drive? My E46 is considerably less expensive to maintain than my E70 or E90.

If you've owned BMW's in the past I don't think an N55 powered X5 is going to shock you when it comes to repairs.

My friends have sedans one is a 2011 528i and the other is a 2014 535xi. I have a family friend who owns a 2010 x3 and a 2005 x5. Out of all of them the x5 has had the most problems but only recently and is 11 years old. I have only owned Honda, Toyota and Subaru vehicles for the last 12 years, never owned german cars.

The 2014 535xi has the same N55 I6 motor as this X5 you're looking at. The 2011 528i is a N/A I6 so less problems than the 535xi and X5 xDrive35i. That X5...depends on model, I6 or V8. Anyhow, the point being none of those are particularly high-maintenance BMW's. None have an ///M badge, and none of them other than the 535 are turbo-charged, so less problems.

With all that said, if you come from Toyotas, Hondas, and Subarus, you are sure to experience higher maintenance costs, some of which may come as a shock to the system. These cars aren't for everyone. If you value simplicity, reliability, fuel economy, etc, I'd stick with those Japanese brands. The X5 (especially a well-optioned one) would be a real treat to drive after those brands, but it will come at some sort of cost in the long run.

If you post the VIN we can decode it for you and tell you about package/options....unless you're already doing that? Are you up to speed on all the available configurations?

Well my 35i has 112000 miles and all that it's needed was a transfer case due to tires getting out of whack.

Otherwise just normal maintenance, oil changes, carbon blasting, trans flush and diff fluid changes, spark plugs, brake and power steering fluid changed, radiator fluid and the usual n55 oil leaks fixed.

That maintenance alone will set you back a few grand unless you do it yourself.

Sorry this took so long I purchased a different one I purchased a 2012 that came in a couple of days later this one had most of the options I was looking for the vin is #5UXZV4C57CL753548. The vanos recall has been done and the water pump was just replaced.

Thanks

A few grand isn't an issue and I have an awesome indy mechanic who is a good friend of mine that is a great BMW mechanic. I was more concerned with like 5-8k worth of stuff I have read horror stories and I have read that others have spent a few grand. Even for my Honda's I end up spending a 2-3k for maintenance type stuff like doing their routine inspections at various mileages which are immensely expensive like $800 per routine maintenance (15, 30k etc.) and that is mostly inspection not actual work.
