Tesla Autopilot fail on german autobahn

Looks like we have another tesla autopilot fail when a tesla crashed into a bus on the autobahn

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/tesla-aut...142135313.html

Cant say I'm too thrilled about public roads being used as their test range with the numbers of failures associated with these systems

I am really sick of this autopilot crap. Just drive your own damned car, wtf is wrong with people. Driving is one of the few enjoyable freedoms they've left us in this world, and these drones want to give that away too. They spend 12 hours a day glued to their iDumbass gadgets, then want to ride around in a pod so they can spend even more time on their iDumbass gadgets. Hell with 'em.

Tesla is basically using the public to test a beta product.

Autopilot is never designed as a real automated system... but people are dumb as use it as such. People need to use some common sense.

You should read the article folks:

Quote:
A Tesla spokesperson however said in a statement that "we have spoken to our customer, who confirmed that Autopilot was functioning properly and that his use of Autopilot was unrelated to the accident.
When used properly the feature can be very useful in preventing both driver fatigue as well as accidents.

People just don't understand that Auto Pilot is there to assist you not to replace you.

All those that gave their full trust to a automobile to steer/control itself at speeds of 100km/h don't deserve to own any Tesla's technology.

I missed that clearly....with the statement from police being

"We will now have to look into why the autopilot didn't work" to prevent the crash, police said in a statement."

Unfortunately autopilot is a selling feature of the Tesla for many people. If they disable it or make it less "auto" then it'll be a big set back for Tesla.

I see Teslas every day on the road... and I've seen people on the computer or dozing off while on autopilot all the time.

Its only a matter of time before people start fucking with cars on autopilot and blocking them from changing lanes/speed matching to prevent exiting highways/etc

Number of failures is actually quit low compared to the documented mileage already. If this rate is already troubling you, nobody should be even driving. People still cause more accidents.

It appears based on the comments from the article that the man first turned on autopilot on the highway, then decided to change lanes. If you put enough torque on the wheel to change lanes, AP is automatically turned off (since it assume you want to manually take over, it's really well implemented), so he basically hit the car in the other lane while changing lanes... he suffered minor injuries and no one on the bus was injured...

According to the article:
A Tesla spokesperson however said in a statement that "we have spoken to our customer, who confirmed that Autopilot was functioning properly and that his use of Autopilot was unrelated to the accident."

This is not really related to AP... just someone who changed lanes and hit another car.

However Model S warns you when you veer into another lane and there's a car there or right behind you. There's a red warning with vibrating steering wheel. It's an assistance feature meant to reduce accident magnitude. I wonder if the feature kicked off, maybe that's why it wasn't that serious? I mean usually the driver could avoid the accident given such warning, maybe the driver ignored or the warning didn't go off. Regardless, the driver should have checked... but really there shouldn't be much of a blind spot when it's a bus on the other lane... So probably just distracted driver.

Either Tesla is cheating or they should find a proper name for their so called sophisticated Auto Pilot system that is prone to having failures .
When one says the word auto pilot what on earth would you expect ? When you hear something that Auto is in you expect it to make things automatically without any intervention ,right ?
Auto pilots in air crafts flies the plane but pilots are in charge of monitoring them while these can fly without pilots having hands on the controllers .Same goes for the marine vehicles
However, in car industries no laws are yet to permit the car manufacturers to enable fully automatic driving .
For instance: W222 Mercedes-Benz S Class can drive but your hands should be on the steering wheel and the car warns you before exiting automatic driving .

I find it amusing the amount of people that think auto pilot is suppose to prevent every single accident.

All you hear from people and see in the headlines are autopilot fail, autopilot this n that, when really it had nothing to do with autopilot and the system isn't made to replace drivers or have them not pay attention.

Tesla calls it "Auto Pilot" and doesn't call it "Advanced Driver Assist". What the hell to do you expect people to do with it when it is call Auto Pilot"? The Tesla owners manual says when using Auto Pilot the driver needs to keep full attention to the road and keep his hands on the wheel and feet on the pedals ready to take back control of the car if the Auto Pilot fucks up. So if one has to pay attention and drive with the Tesla Auto Pilot on, what is the point of it?

It's human nature that once you subrogate an activity to someone else (in this case driving to Tesla's Auto Pilot), the human loses interest in the activity and stops paying attention. Tesla should be sued out of business for releasing this function in it's cars and testing it on open public roads. The Tesla engineers who develop this shit are always paying attention to the road because they are observing how their really cool Auto Pilot drives the car. Consumers stop paying attention when the car starts driving itself.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Yeah, distracted doing something else, because he thought the Auto Pilot was driving the car...

If you don't want to drive, then take a plane, bus, taxi, subway, or hire a driver.

I understand what you're saying, but if Tesla provides the driver with a clear description of how to use it, and the driver deviates from that process, why should they be held liable. With the statement in their manual, they release themselves from any liability.

For sure the naming convention misleads people and they associate auto pilot with airplanes being on auto pilot and they think planes are flying themselves, meanwhile one of the pilots is always on duty observing everything.

You can't be serious about issuing statements in the owners manual (and on the big screen) releases Tesla from any liability. First off not every owner reads the owners manual. Second it is easy to ignore the notification on the big screen. Any lawyer will beat that argument in 5 minutes in court.
