X5d reliability

Sorry if this was discussed before but Ive search and didnt really come to a good conclusion.. either the x5d is pretty good or im bad at searching so please bear with me.

Im looking at two X5d at the moment, both 2012 and both have pretty standard options.

Option1
2012 CPO with 24k miles for $37k, new car warranty good til 12/2015 and cpo good til 12/2017

Option 2
2012 non CPO with 41k miles for $32k, warranty is good til 12/2016

Id like to know all the x5d's experience with their cars. Are they pretty reliable enough to buy a car with a short warranty period? Or should I bite the bullet and go for the CPO car?

Option 2 is a bit risky but the price seem right. Given that it has a higher mileage car, i figured all the kinks have been worked out.

Let me know your thoughts.

TIA!

My wife loves hers to death. It's a 2014. In fact, I enjoy it so much I'm considering buying a newer model too.

No real reliability issues of grave concern.

We just had the pressure sensor fail in the common rail system which kept shutting down her vehicle. Replaced on warranty and good to go!

My only gripe is the turbo lag when driving in D, and not Sport mode.

In this year of ownership I think we put on about 30k km.

2014 is a different car. I have an 11 and reliability is terrible. Shit always breaks and i have to take it in. Get a warranty
I got 76k on mine last repair at 75k was the liftgate strut. Cost by dealer would have been 1.2k

Just got my x5d back from dealer yesterday. Passive tank needs replacement but CPO covering costs. Looking at previous records it appears that most of the issues are emissions related. I'd love to figure out a way to remove/disable the emissions systems and still pass smog here in CA.

Thanks for the response. from the sounds of things, nothing majorly wrong with the car and unexpected breakdown resulting from premature mechanical breakdown.

i think with emission or anything fuel or carbon related is as expected as it is an oil burner after all.

Im scratching the option 2 i listed above. i found another CPO car near me that is about 35k miles and $35k. I just need to find time to take stop by the dealer and take a look at it. I hope they dont give me a crap trade in value for my 08 X5 3.0...

I have an 11 with 73K and i haven't had any problems thus far. For every horror story you hear there is the exact opposite.

If this is your first time looking to purchase an E70 X5, I'd highly suggest looking into the comfort seat option. I've told many others and still tell potential buyers that the seats are very different. For me the comfort seats were a must have and that option alone narrowed my search results by 60-70%. It's a great option and one I'd recommend looking into if comfort is a priority.

A bunch depends on how much you plan on driving it and if you will hit the mileage marks before the time runs out. Additionally if you fix things yourself or have it done. All of mine have been CPO and I don't think I have ever used that coverage, just the new vehicle coverage.
Mine has been in the shop almost a week now with no end in sight.

So, 1:1 ratio, putting BMW reliability at 50% ?

P.S. I am in the "good story" camp.

Haha interesting and funny way to look at it. One can only hope we stay in the "good story" camp….knock on wood.

Reminds me of the day i bought my x5 and as i drove off the lot the check engine light came on lol. Warranty for the win.

We have a 2012 with 45k on it and it's been very reliable.
Make sure you check the carfax. Get a service history from the dealer and go over each service item.

Trading in a car on a used car is tricky. The most the dealer will give you for your car is the auction value of your trade. Unless, of course, the dealer talks you into paying an exorbitant amount for the X5d. In which case, he'll offer you more for your trade. See the trick?
My suggestion here would be to do some research and have a firm idea in mind how much you think you want to pay for the X5d without a trade. When you negotiate, negotiate with the understanding you do not have a trade. After you've arrived at a satisfactory price, then introduce the trade possibility. You will find out right away what the auction value is of your trade in. The dealer will likely encourage you to sell the car yourself. That's been my experience, anyway.
Good Luck with it!

^this without a doubt!

I wouldn't put up with the basic seats. Comfort seats FTW!

Plain seats are brutal. They're two flat, perpendicular pieces of leather beside each other.

Are the comfort seat option the same as the sport seats you guys are referring too? does the seat comes in a package?

No, they're different.

There were 4 seats in the E70 -

-base/standard
-sport seats (come with Sport and M Sport models)
-multi-contour, or comfort - standalone option or part of Active Ventilated Seat Package. Multi-contour adds further adjustment options over sport
-ventilated seats - not available standalone, they come with Active Ventilated Seat Package. Includes the multi-contour option, ventilation, and active/massaging option (the last one is only on the driver's seat)

I have a 2012 35d with 41,000 miles and have had no problems. My best friend is the lead mechanic at my local BMW dealership (lucky me ) and he advised me to go with the 35d over the V8. He says the V8 tends to have tons of expensive problems the higher the mileage gets. Out of all the X5's he sees on a daily bases the 35d has the least amount of problems.

Remember that this is a forum and most come here with problems so you will only see a few posts of the good verses tons of posts on the bad.

Well base on this, I see more 35d post here than 35i. So, I guess the 35i is more reliable or owners don't have time to complaint about it. I know V8s are the most problematic and the most fun to drive also.

I would tend to agree on that note. the 3.5i should be pretty reliable consider they use this engine on their 335 or 535, of course with different variation.

I think the x5d is priced just right about now. im working with a few dealers to get around 33k or so on a CPO but this will be a stretch.

To get what? 35d or 35i
There is alot of 35d on the market now. I don't know why.

Ive been searching for x5d, mostly 2012 as they are the lowest CPO cars I can get. I think 2011 x5d CPO are hard to come by.

I do see a lot of x5d on the market but a lot of them are high mileage and out of warranty. I prefer to have warranty for at least a year or so. this way i can learn what the car's problem is without breaking the bank.

I probably do a search in 3.5i vs 3.5d. the 3.5i is cheaper in more ways but i do like the torque and the slight gas efficiency of the x5d more.

I think the diesels are flooding the market a bit now because gas is cheap again, so people are less worried about fuel economy. It helps lower the asking prices on them, too. I was psyched when I was shopping for mine back in Feb.
