Ski rack or roof box

The time has come to upgrade to a good ski rack for the winter road trips. I'd like to know form the forum which ski rack or cargo box works best with the X5M, so many options. BMW options seem piece prohibitive vs. REI or other options.......

I was looking to get a roof box for extra cargo but decided not to for the price was too high for my budget and I don't need the extra cargo space that often.

When I was researching, the Yakima Whispbar would be my choice. Suppose to be very quiet. http://www.rei.com/product/835227/wh...-rail-bar-pair

As for the roof box, I would get this Thule 612 Hyper XL http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/78004?productId=1291017

I like roof box as opposed to ski rack because the box has protection from outside elements

Personally, I prefer boxes as they are more versatile, and you don't expose your equipment to thieves or to elements.

Have you looked on local CL? I've found Thule Atlantis 1600 cubic box once for $250

In my local ad, there is a Thule 1800 cubic one that looks clean and stored indoors for $320. So great deals to be had if you're willing to go preowned. IMO hold out for a well maintained one that has been stored indoors. You'll find some people who bought and only used less than 5 times.

Alternatively, in my area people are renting out nice boxes for $50 a weekend and $80 a week. So no need to break the bank if you'll use it infrequently

Thanks for your suggestion. Will look at CL.
