Custom Exhaust

Hey all,

I've been researching exhaust options and was discussing it with my local tuner/BMW shop. They offered to build a prototype custom exhaust for the X5M and said it would cost roughly $2500. Does this sound high? Has anyone else done this? Thanks!

There really is not enough info to form an opinion. What material will be used, regular muffler shop mild steel, stainless steel (type 409), titanium, Carbon fiber, some other unobtanium? What tubing diameter? What thickness? What brand mufflers and cats? What are the specs on the cats 100 cell, 200 cell, etc. Mandrell bent or tubing bender bent.

It could be an ok deal where the shop spends $500 on parts makes $2,000 on labor or they spend $1,500 on parts and make $1,000 on labor.

Until you have the specs on all the components, it is had to really comment. If you are going full custom, try to find a company the specializes in exhaust fabrication. Ask around for people who make custom headers. They will be able to build the full exhaust from the turbo back for you.

They are not robbing you. Even a system with lower to mid grade components would cost around that prices. Shop time, space and warranty all cost $$

Thanks guys. In further discussion, they deal in the Turner exhausts for the f10 M5 so this would be similar to that and it's basically a muffler delete. My hypothesis is that the main driver of the cost compared to the Turner exhaust is that this would be a one-off example, as opposed to being able to scale it across the large M5 aftermarket population. The X5M production numbers are already small, and the number of us who modify them are as well.

Turner M5 Exhaust

It would be similar to this. The M5 is somewhat louder than our cars to begin with, but 3:05 in this sounds awesome to me!
