cost of X5 2013 - repaint due to car being keyed!

Hi Guys,

I own a 2013 X5 30d SE (UK spec) and had the front left two door panels keyed by some idiot!

Could someone let me know the kind of repair cost it would be if sent to a BMW dealer? looks like its fairly deep. The colour is black saphhire.

Thanks

A BMW Dealer could either handle it for you, or refer you to a particular independent shop they work with. And when I mention the former option, they will still take it to an independent shop, but charge you a premium to do so.

That said, prices vary by a large margin here in the US for work. Often swings of 100% are not uncommon based on regional locations, current work load, and the mood of the estimator and what he/she thinks of you.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something on the order of $1500+ USD for both doors to be sanded, resprayed, clear coat, and buffing.

Why take it to a BMW dealership? Find a good body show locally and have them do it. My brother had the bumpers of his M3 sprayed at Hexagon in East Finchley and the paint is just a touch off vs. the original paint.

It makes me so angry when I see something like this. I hope you get it fixed easily.

Thanks guys for all your help! Yeah- i cant believe there are still people out there who think keying a car is 'fun'

I've had many 'premium' cars over the years but this is the first time its happened!

I wonder if some car colors are an easier target than others. For example, would a keying a black car give more satisfaction than say, a white one?

Probably not, but Black is the easiest to show any imperfections in prep work.

When things like this happen you wish you had a front and rear dash cam that would have recorded them and hopefully find out who they were to take further action.

I saw a video online recently where someone in an underground car park was keying vehicles. The dashcam of one of those vehicles happened to be switched on and caught the entire thing.

Very nice, I hope they strung the SOB up. I keep thinkig about getting one and putting it in when I install the retofit backup camera. I like some of the units that do exactly what the one you mentiond did and works off of motion when the vehicle is not runing..
