Just picked up X5d, check engine light on

I just picked up my X35d today, now check engine light is on but the OBC check in vehicle status menu on idrive says all systems ok. I don't even get the red triangle with the exclamation mark.

Help

Could be many things, but probably emission related. I had a check engine light come on. Dealer would clear it, but light would come back on. All systems would check OK on iDrive. Code 4D16. In the end dealer replaced both front and rear NOx sensors, no problems since.

Thanks

I am hoping its a sensor issue too. Other than that loving the truck

Update

Good news, the CEL went away by itself today after I took her to the highway and gave it a bit of gas

I guess all she wanted was to be spanked. All indications are I will average over 20mpg on mixed driving so can't complain

My wife drive ours and I use to sweat about the gas thing for the first few months, the gas nozzles won't go in the BMW diesel flapper anyway. We had our DPF melt once (my fault I was doing a top speed run) and the first thing BMW did was sample our fuel and send it away....nice little trick to get out of paying for warranty repairs. BMW said that sometimes Gas stations accidentally put some gas in the diesel tank and this causes issues. I hadn't fuelled up in two weeks so good luck going after the gas station two or three weeks later.

That's a good looking unit, I got a tune on mine it's a night and day difference.

Thanks for the advice. I have to say the diesel folks really look after each other.

I guess given what you said I should really be careful where I fill up my diesel. I was planning on getting it from Exxon or Citgo. I find they have the most competitive prices here.

I will consider the tune later on, I am still getting a feel for the diesel driving experience and so far not disappointed at all

OP, you may want to read the code at local Autozone. It went away from console, but should still be in memory.
At the very least, documenting it with dealer may give basis to repair the failed part for free when warranty runs out (since the part showed sign of failure prior to that).

Thanks. I will try that.

I also wanted to add some observations I have made.

My 2011 had the base seats and base audio (US Spec)

The 2013 has multi contour seats and Premium Audio.

Multi contour seats
I used to read multiple posts about how good these were and used to think people were exaggerating. I think those posts understated how good these seats are. When I get an F15 after my lease is up I will have to make sure I tick that option

Premium audio
OMG, I think this option is only like $1,000 but this is another $1,000 worth spending. (Not sure how much it is on the F15). I like my music loud and I still have not reached the max for this system.

Active steering.
I did not have this on my 2011 and the jury is still out for me on this one. The steering does look and feel great though. Maybe I haven't really pushed the truck to appreciate this feature.

The 35d may be a little slower than the 35i but the truck drives in such a way that you don't miss the few ticks the 35i has over the 35d. The tq which I now feel makes the diesel experience great. I think I will stick with the d on my next purchase 5 out of 5 so far

Yeah turns out this truck has an issue with the CEL. I have had it numerous times now. It never stays for 2 full days. If I am lucky it goes away the same day and if I am unlucky it turns off after a day and a half. The first month I probably got it once, the second month maybe 2-3 times but lately I have not been able to go through a tank without it going off.

Anyway I have scheduled it to go in tomorrow so hopefully its something minor. I thought it would go away by itself.

I just had the same problem - only had my X5D for a week before it went on. Dealer said it was soot build up causing a clog..

Yeah definitely check it out even if it goes away because it will become a problem later for sure. Is it still under warranty?

Alright so the problem is a NOx sensor. It should be ready tomorrow. The good thing is today that little f***** was on when I took the truck in. So they had time to check to see the root cause. I was worried that when I get there the light would be off.

The truck was a demo that I leased so it's got the full factory warranty.

Hopefully this is it, I have a long trip in July to Chicago. I am trying to make it there in one and a quarter tanks. (770 miles each way). I am there for a week.

Didn't they tell you want 4D16 exactly is? You could have also read it for free at Autozone.

I had my pre and post NoX sensors replaced after check engine, but the code was "P20EE - SCR NOx Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1" (story here)

Not a lot of info on the internets about 4D16, but seems to indicate "SCR System Efficiency, Metering Valve Clogged"

I was only told the sensor needed to be replaced. I will know more from the invoice when I pick it up
