X5's with over 100,000 miles thread
This thread is for X5 owners with over 100,000 miles on their car.
First, I have been reading a lot of reviews of the car and 50% of people are not happy with the reliability of the car. I just bought an X5 3.0si with 111,600 miles on it. It had a clean Carfax but lots of routine maintenance like brake fluid changes (why so many) and other things that should not be routine. My Mechanic checked out the car and the only thing he mentioned is it needs new tires up front. Everything was tight and all the electronics was working fine. The EMF switch was broken and I will repair that. The top of the glove box was peeling off the cover (fixed that) and a cigarette hole in the rear seat which I will repair. My Mechanic and I were both surprised that we had a real spare tire in the back. So, I am asking anyone that has a X5 with over 100,000 miles to comment here on any maintenance issues (especially 2007's). Mainly large cost items. What I am trying to determine here is by the time you reach 100,000 miles, most of the major mechanical problems should have been fixed. I am assuming that the car has been routinely maintained by a BMW dealer or excellent BMW Mechanic. So chime in with your complaints and problems here. Regards wjibby

A trend I think I'm noticing with the 35d is those people who just drive it around town are more likely to have emissions related issues than those often seeing longer highway trips. I bring this up because I strongly believe longevity is correlated not only in preventative maintenance but also in how the vehicle is driven. That being said, maybe those who chime in can provide some insight as to how much highway driving the vehicle sees.

2011 X5 3.5 with 99K miles, waterpump and rear airbags changed in last 2 years of owning it. I'm seeing some coolant under it here and there, have to refill 1 quart monthly so will need to address this next. Other than that just do my maintenance and she has been good.

I'm at around 86k. I can't wait to unload mine for something with lower maintenance costs and less specialty tools required. I may just sell the car with all the unique BMW tools I've had to buy over the years.

2010 X5M, just rounded 100k while taking my second roadtrip from Seattle to Hollywood and back to Seattle for Bimmerfest. He's had it's issues but it's by no means been a huge headache.
In the 30k miles I've put on it in a little over two years I've had to replace injectors, CCV/PCV lines, charge pipe gaskets (one was torn, I replaced all), vacuum leak (replaced about 50% since they were the easiest to reach, I'll do the rest when I do a turbo swap), turbo coolant pump, vacuum pump (bad gasket), low pressure fuel line (recommended by a BMW tech buddy since a revision has a better and removable sensor), then most recently I've gone colder plugs since running JB4 (plans for meth as well), then replaced all the drivetrain fluids. Other than that, it's been great. Last edited by m5james; 06-08-2017 at 01:11 PM.. |

Had the boss confirm no planed layoffs and outlook looked great! Was still in college at the time but was making a cool 25 an hour and no bills as room and board was paid for so I bought it! 3 weeks later poof company was bought and the whole office was laid off... Man what a trip! Luckily found work right away but a scary experience. |

2011 35i here with almost 92K, had to replace some head gaskets due to an oil leakage situation. Currently undergoing an issue now with my tensioner belt so getting that fixed with a few pulley's. Other than that I've had the drive shaft changed out, doing the recall on the fuel pump because why not lol pretty solid still though!

Turned the 189k today. I know that before we purchased the car, the EGR cooler was replaced under warranty. Other than that, I'm not sure what else was done prior to our ownership.
Since we purchased Thanksgiving weekend of 2014, we've put just under 100k miles on the X5. The only part we've had fail was the right rear air shock. Since we purchased it, I've done a lot of preventative maintenance and installed the staggered 20" Y spoke wheels. Parts I've replaced/ maintenance: -Replaced cowl plastic that someone broke -Fuel Rail sensor (it popped messing with the JBD, R&R no issues since) -In-tank fuel pump -F&R diff fluid (Amsoil) -Transfer case fluid (2x since purchase) -Transmission filter/ fluid (2x since purchase) -Fuel filter (every other oil change ish) -Rotella T6 w/ Archoil 9100 (I try to change every 5k-7500k, went 12k and had favorable blackstone analysis.) -Clean MAF/ K&N filter every other oil change -Drilled/slotted F&R brakes -Harmonic balancer -AC/ACC belts At 173k added the BPC Stage 2+ tune. We love this X5 and don't see ourselves getting rid of it until the X7 is released. We average 27-29mpg and have gotten over 30mpg with 100% highway driving. I also do a lot of towing (335d) with the X5; it's a really great vehicle and with the 3rd row seat, it's perfect for my family. We have 4 kids 9 and under. All that said, my wife called me and said "I heard a loud pop" and now it's riding rough. The rear is sagging, so both air bags are flat. Hopefully one of the air supply lines burst or something. I hope it's not the compressor. Ether way, I'll get that fixed soon. Update: driverside airbag was the culprit. All fixed! I've attached the 12k oil analysis for review. 104k on 2012 50i. Been pretty sound so far. Had the large "service" recall at around 80k miles. Since then it's had some vacuum lines replaced and a new seal on the front diff. Otherwise standard maint items. Am starting to have some odd vibrations though and dreading that it's the T case. Wait and see.

Larger thing I feel is under heavy acceleration there is a vibration or shake. Also when coming to a stop right before fully stopped there is a jerk that happens. Having a shop look this week and change fluids in the T-Case. Also got new tires put on recently and don't think they have the best balance job. It's throwing me off a little.

Trying an independent for the first time. Normally do the dealership but am less and less impressed with their interest to trouble shoot and problem solve. They just want you in and out as fast as possible and will tell you anything to do so.

Looks like this was a larger issue for the N62 but isn't totally gone in the N63. Clearly with mileage we drive a lot of highway miles which seems to go well for the seals. Also not always in a super hot climate like Florida. Furthest south we run is SC. Only thing with smoking I have seen is on start up there is quite a bit of smoke for the first couple seconds. We had been averaging 7-8k miles before needing to add a quart. Lately that seems to be coming down but we just moved to the city so slightly more stop and go. This is certainly something to watch for. We are really only trying to hold onto this vehicle for one more year or most 35k more miles. Mostly hoping to hold for the new X5 to come so we can pick up the current model for reasonable price or move to a RR/RRS as that is what she wants next. The independent shop I am taking it to tomorrow evidently likes to do a thorough exam and write up a laundry list of repairs. Interested to see what what they come up with. When the dealership replaced the seal on the front diff he said everything looked in good shape. I'll report back with details tomorrow.
