x5m/x6m Michelin Pilot Super Sports to replace Dueler
Anyone thought about putting Mich PSS on the x5m/x6m ? I'm looking to possibly replace the RFT with summer only tires ( i have a set of blizzaks for winter)
Front diff Speedometer1: 60mph vs 61.1 mph Speedometer Difference: 1.915% too fast Diameter Difference: - Diameter Difference: 1.89% rear are the same. weight savings 50lbs of unsprung weight savings and a AA grip level vs A. good news is price came down considerably on the Bridgestones PSS prices are $425 for front and $447 for the rear.

I those tires.
Use to have them on my 335i. But that much of a difference on a 4wd, don't think it's a good idea.

Exactly.
Difference in size will render the AWD system to think that the front tires are spinning, so will indefinitively try to compensate. Do a on the WEB, you should find article that talk about just that. I was a mechanic, but for not having experimented it myself, I can't tell you what kind of damages, at what speed, etc. Not a good way to transform your X5 as a rear wheel drive...

I was just looking at the Tirerack reviews for the Michelin Pilot Super Sport - there doesn't appear to be any other tire that comes close to it in overall performance, quietness and wear.
I am a big Michelin fan - I have a 2011 X5 Sports Package 5.0 with Adaptive Drive and 19" wheels. I will be using the 19's for snow tires this winter (I live in the Colorado mountains). Next Spring I plan to put some 20s on with the best (within reason) summer tires I can find. I think I will look into the Michelin Pilot Super Sports but in a non staggered setup. Opinions? |

Why won't they do a 275/40R20. If you really like those tires, here's your setup: 295/35R20 front (wheel width required, 10" to 11.5") 335/30R20 back (wheel required 11.5 - 12.5, damn, 20" set too narrow by 1/2 an inch) Tires in the back are smaller by .77% Or to have them almost identical in height (0.07% taller in the back): 345/30R20 back (wheel width required, 12" - 13", won't fit the wheels) It,s starting to be a little wide, though. 1 inch wider than the 315, or almost 14" wide. Too wide for me, but it's the only setup in 20" Michelin Pilot Super Sport that would be close in height (actually, they're 3.15% smaller than the 255/50R19).

Get four 20 inch wheels, 10.5 or 11 inch wide Run non staggered setup, 295/35/20s all around They are a little shorter - 28.1 instead of 28.7 1.985% too fast or 61.1 mph at speedo of 60 They are wider than 275/40/20 And narrower than 315/35/20 Width is 11.61 compared to 12.4 for 315/35s or 10.82 for the 275/40s Hmmm Quote:

Yet another idea for using the Michelin Pilot Super Sports:
Rear - 315/35/20 - width = 12.4 and circumference = 90.1 Fronts - 245/40/20 - width = 9.65 and circumference = 90.1 These two tires are dead on in circumference, although the fronts are a little skinny. Interestingly enough the factory staggered front is: 275/40/20 - width = 10.9 and circumference = 90.0 Notice that the factory front circumference is slightly less than the rears (90.0 VS 90.1). The above 245/40/20 is 90.1 Hmmmm This is a combo I am going to look into seriously! The Michelin Pilot Super Sports are spectacular tires - very lightweight and their handling prowess is close to legendary. I think this is my plan for summer!!! Now, I just need to find the perfect rims - I am thinking 10" in the front and 12" in the rear! novablackm3, thx for bringing up the Pilot Super Sports to begin with! Actually, it is the 245/45/20 that has the correct circumference of 90.1, and the Pilot Super Sport does come in this size.
However, how do I find out if it has sufficient weight rating? |

245/45ZR20/XL Load Index 103 (875 kg (1,930 lb)) Rim Width 7.5" to 9" They do make an XL tire, and 103 should be sufficient. Close, but sufficient. But the problem will be with the front wheels. They are way too wide to accomodate 245's.

Since I don't have my 20s yet, I could consider an aftermarket set of 20" rims where I could get 9" width rims for the front tires.
Aaarghh, it would be much better if they just made the Pilot Super Sports in 275/40/20s!!!! I have heard very very good things about the Vredstein Ultrac Sessantra Summer Tires. Everything I read about them sounds very very good. For maximum handling on the X5 for summer in the staggered 20" fitment it seem like there are two contenders: Vredstein Ultrac Sessantra Continental Extreme Contact DWS I actually think the Vredstein is a higher performing (handling) tire (based upon reviews I have read) than the DWS version of the Conti Extreme. If Conti made the DW (not DWS) in the sizes that fit the X5 in the staggered 20s, then it seems like the Extreme DW and the Sessantra might be about equal. Unless something else becomes available in the 20" X5 staggered fitment by Spring, I am going to look very hard at the Vredstein Sessantra. Last edited by sarends; 09-27-2012 at 10:42 AM.. |

I think the Vredesteins are the best bet, plus they are cheaper and come in stock sizes. I like the PSS...I have them on my GTR, but they are probably overkill for the M. The stock tires are so big that it really has all the traction it needs even with the stock runflats. I had Toyo Proxes ST's (all season) on my M and they could handle everything I threw at them, including launch control, plus felt much better than the runflats due to the lighter weight.

I have an 05 E53 4.8is and I would love to replace my Dimaris with Pilot SS. Assuming you find the right sizes, would the load rating of the tires be a problem? I don't tow anything.

How about sheer ride quality. I test drove a 4.8i 2007 with the run flat duelers and I could feel everything on the road. It really rode like sh%t. Was this everyone else's experience? Are there any decent ride quality run flats or do we have to go non-run flat and if so which all seasons do people like best on these?

Purchase a set of OEM rear rims and run the same size 315s on all 4 corners. I understand from the Bimmer magazine that running this set up will help handling and that Dinan considered offering this set up on its Dinan 4.6 package. According to Dinan reducing the size difference from front to rear helps to reduce understeer. There is a post on xoutpost where a member writes about doing this. But I do not recall him writing about the improved handling aspects as Dinan has in the past. Might be an option although expensive. Thoughts?? |
